Dish Tuning - Local Channels

nomadpsp

First Post. .. I've realigning my dish pointing after wind storm. . most sats are locked back in but still not getting locals. Signals on some transponders on 99(s) and 103 (s) are well below spec but other are pinning the needle. . Not sure if this is an alignment issue or something faulty.  in cables, connectors, LNB. STB? Here are my readings. Any clues in these numbers?

Thanks

Dont worry about the 103s and 99s, those are spot beams.

Overall, your signals are OK. Although your 99C and 103c and 103Cb could use a lit more tweaking

Thanks. . in your experience is it best to tweak either elevation or azimuth . .ot both?. . I've been told the tilt is not that critical. . don't want to degrade any of the other sats too much in the process. .I'm assuming my DTV locals are coming off 99C and 103c and 103Cb .I'm also not seeing all of the available local HD channels in the guide (just added the AM-21. . I've been using A-B switch until now as weather back up.) . Guide only identified 3 of 8 OTAs that come in on my PC with USB tuner that was connected to same antenna . most sigs =>85% .

You want to tweak both elevation and azimuth, leave the tilt alone. Your HD locals are actually beamed from either 99s or 103s. The channels from the AM21 comes from a data base and not and actuall scan as your TV, sonic the channels are not on the database they will not be included on the guide

Set the receiver to show the green signal bars on one of the 99c transponders.  Then, leaving the main clamps secure, use the fine tuning screws to adjust just the azimuth.  As you turn the screw you should be able to determine where the peak is.  Then clamp the azimuth and repeat the exercise with the elevation.  You are close so small corrections are all that should be required.

Note that the AM21 uses a data base to determine which local channels will be available and it's common for a straight antenna to tuner setup to see channels that the AM21 does not.  Due to the massive proliferation of local sub channels, Directv stopped adding new ones a while ago.

I've finally been able to get back on the roof and tweaked dish  as suggested. Here are new #s. . slightly better. . but still no locals:

I'm a bit confused about which sats beam locals . .

PEDS48 first replied "Dont worry about the 103s and 99s, those are spot beams." but later stated "Your HD locals are actually beamed from either 99s or 103s. " Those are the two weakest sats. . 103 (s) 1-4 and  99 (s) 2,3,17,18

Would it matter that I'm physically away from the designated year-round subscription geography? (We live in SoCal during winter and move our STB. . . we want to keep current with local happenings in MN. I assumed that the sats don't/can't monitor where you are . . as long as you're paying the monthly fee:0 . . Thanks,

When you give us all the details, we can give you the correct info.  You will not, repeat not, get your local stations from MN when in CA.  Locals are broadcast from the satellites on "spot" beams and are only visible within the geographic area they are intended for.  Your inability to get 99c and 103c signals in the 90's may be due to the dish mast not being absolutely plumb.  That is an essential first step in aligning a multi-sat dish.

Yes, it matters.  As dcd points out, you're outside of the "spot beam" transponders used to broadcast the MN locals.   You could call DirecTV to temporarily change your Service Address to SoCal so you can receive those locals.  Or perhaps use an off-air antenna to receive those local channels.

Of course, and we weren't intending to "pick" on you or demean you in any way.  We do see quite a number of posts from folks who don't divulge the full details and sometimes it appears that they are worried that they have cheated the system in some way and so conceal some of the facts.  Inasmuch as they don't know which details are deal breakers, it becomes impossible to assist them properly.  Had you not disclosed the two location situation we would all still be struggling to determine why you weren't receiving local channels.  And, conversely, had you explained that in your initial post, the first response woulkd have explained the situation.  Anyway, nuff said, enjoy the sunny CA weather.
