I am planning on upgrading to HD, but have two questions: 1. WIll my HD box work with the non-HD dish I use with my motorhome? 2. Will my non-HD boxes (model D12-100) work on a HD dish?
Thanks, Bruce

Keep in mind when your HD receiver is connected to a non-HD dish, you will not receive any of the HD programming. You may need to go back through satellite setup each time you change the dish it is connected to, in order to properly configure it for the dish being used. It will work just fine with the older dishes, but only when properly configured, and without getting HD. |

By satellite setup, do you mean the altitude and compass adjustment of the dish? Or is there a setup for a HD box connected to a non-HD dish?

He means the HD Receiver setup. It should work OK when it's configured for an HD dish but actually connected to your 18" round dish, but it might have problems.

BRUCE!!!! SAVE YOUR MONEY AND YOUR SANITY!!! I AM GOING THROUGH THIS AS I TYPE THIS. I HAVE A CLASS A MOTORHOME AND AM A FULL TIMER. I PURCHASED A NEW KING CONTROLS TRAC-KING NEW A YEAR AND A HALF AGO WHEN I PURCHASED MY MOTORHOME!!! I LOVED IT!!! KEY WORD LOVED!! I DECIDED TO UPGRADE MY TV TO A 32" HD TV. EVERY THING WAS FINE UNTIL I DECIDED TO BUY THE HD UPGRADE FROM KING CONTROLS $295 DOLLARS!!!! :( I ALSO UPGRADED MY BOX TO AN HR23-700. I HAD TWO DTV TECS WALK OFF THE JOB AND KING CONTROLS TECS ARE NO HELP EITHER. SAVE YOUR TIME AND MONEY YOU ONLY GET ABOUT 10 HD CHANNELS ON 110 SAT ANYWAY. BUY YOURSELF A NICE TV AND ANOTHER FOR THE BEDROOM. STAY FAR AWAY FROM THE HIGH DEF STUFF. THE TRAC-KING IN MOTION DISH WORKS OK BUT LEAVE IT AT THAT. THE DOME ALONE COST OVER $2000.00. I TOOK THE DOME OFF OF IT TO SEE WHATS INSIDE. ITS ALL PLASTIC AND A VERY SMALL PLASTIC REFLECTOR AND ONE LNB. NOT MORE THEN A FEW HUNDRED IN MATERIAL AND PARTS!! GOOD LUCK |

DIRECTV Technical Help ForumsThanks for the warning. My class C has a crank-up non-HD dish, and I just wanted to take one of our home HD-DVR's on our RV trips to be able to record. We're spoiled at home, not having to watch commercials! Looks like I need to 2 cables to the dish to be able to record. I'll try it in the driveway before we leave for our next trip. Sure is nice to have 200+ channels instead of the basic cable they give you at RV parks.
My wife would love to have a Trac-King, but we're summer RV'ers only, can't justify it. The winters are too nice here in AZ to leave, but gotta get out of here in the summer.

Many of the RV dishes, although they are labelled HD, won't receive the 99 and 103 satellite slots where all the HD channels come from. They will receive 110 and 119, but all the HD channels in those slots are going away (some have already been removed), they have been duplicated on 99 for some time now. |

To all RV'ers interested: I thought it was throwing away money to invest what the Winnegard & Kingdome dish setups cost when I decided that my travel trailer's Winnegard "crank up over-the-air antenna", even using the "powered booster"(which would not pick up my local network channels from my own driveway, much less at a campground....I would have had to be sitting in the TV stations parking lot to get reception) was not providing me with a TV service that was worth anything and not every campground provides free cable hookup. Soooo...I bought me a Toshiba REGZA 26" LCD HDTV, with a built-in upconverting DVD player and called DirecTV. Since I had been a customer since 1994, D* did not hesitate at all to send out an installer with a H-21 HD receiver and a Slimline 5LNB HD dish(just like the one for my home's HD service). I purchased a tripod and the installer was more than cooperative in installing the HD receiver in my RV(he had to "gut" the outside coax input-to inside outlets because they had multiple "splitters" that DO NOT work with DirecTV HD services, to get a direct feed from my outside coax connection to my inside outlet) and helped get my Slimline dish mounted on my tripod. After setup, I was receiving all of the programming that I have in my home with an absolutely awesome HD picture on my Toshiba. Total cost..........$21. That's my recommendation to other RV'ers.......and I'm sticking to it. BTW, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to set this tripod-mounted HD dish up wherever I go camping. I just plug the campground's address into dishpointer.coms website to get the alignment coordinates and carry a bubble level and a decent digital compass with me to level and align the dish. Nothing to it! |

What type of meter are you using to align your Slimline 5LNB HD dish? I am a fulltime Rver, new to DTV. |

David,
I use the meter supplied by DTV, the brand name is Vanco, Part #3A0015.

It rarely takes me more than 15-30 minutes whenever I go camping to align my dish using dishpointer.com coordinates and a digital compass(you can get one at WalMart for approx. $15). Personally, I think any satellite signal meter at all is an overkill.

DIRECTV Technical Help ForumsWith the digital video recorder (DVR) box, you can record something, watch it later, and fast forward thru the commercials. Or when your favorite show starts, just hit pause, take out the trash, etc, for 20 minutes, and then come back and watch and FF thru those pesky ads.

Hi Bruce, I just joined the forum so I can answer your questions. HD is awesome! I had to upgrade shortly after installation of the SD DVR because my TV is HD compatible and the only way to get the picture to fill the screen was to go HD.
1. If you get HD you will also need to upgrade your dish. The HD dishes are oval and about 32" wide, I don't know if they make a smaller version for RV's.
2. Your SD receiver should still work with the HD dish, however I am not familiar with your receiver, the D12-100. I am a fairly new customer and we started with 2 non HD DVR's, the R22-100's.
When we were originally installed they gave us the new HD dish even though we only had SD DVR's. And the Directv tech that was here yesterday confirmed that, as I am having problems with reception on the AM21 off-air tuner and had to request a replacement.

DIRECTV Technical Help ForumsJudy,
Got my SD dish swapped out at home with an HD. I use an SD box on the RV since the roof mounted dish is SD. Got the Premier Pkg to make the wife happy, everything works great!

By reading the threads it sounds like I am on the right track...I just installed the Winegard 3005 " 5 satellite " slimline dish on the motorhome...moved our two older Directv R-10 DVRs into the motorhome...connected and changed the dish setup in the DVRs for the new 3 LNB dish...all is up and working...signal on the three satellites is 90%+..Here is the problem...the R-10s are not picking up locals...the WInegard says it is locked on 101, 110, 119...as I left it in multi satellite mode..so does this mean it should also see the 99 and 103 HD satellites? I wasthinking so, as the selling point to the 3005 is it gets all five satellites just like the slimline dish at home. Or is the dish good, and the R-10 receivers can't get locals? I tried to look for the dish-receiver capatability on the Winegard site and could not find it... Please help as soon as you can Thanks, Marc |

br_holmes: It's best to start your own new thread. We have no idea where you're located. You might be in an area that gets its locals from the 99/103º MPEG4 satellites, which your R10 cannot receive. Do the R10 Tivos get those channels at home? Do you also have a second dish for locals beamed from the 72.5º satellite?

And....If you have a residential account, your locals will only be available within about 100 miles of your home address. |

Hello Everyone
I really want to thank everyone for replying to my message that I
posted on the DIRECTV Forum but I just got one today that a guy has five satellites dishes and only God only knows what other equipment he has and you guy are talking way over my head and way out of my pocket if you know what I mean. I want to thank each and everyone of you. I was just spoiled when I was living Germany watching AFN with no commercials. Thank you |
