On my computer on the Network I have two icons called Directv Mediashare renderer and two icon called Directv2PC MediaShare. I have read the forum and tired different steps but I still cannot get the Music, Photo & More to come up in the menu. Please any advise. Dirk |

Dirk, This is the most widespread Media Share problem that has had limited success stories in correcting. I am assuming that you have Windows Media Player 11 installed(no other versions of WMP will work) and I take it by your comment that you have read and followed the "normal" procedure to enable network sharing on your PC as follows: To enable file sharing on your PC for Media Share: 1. Disable any firewalls(personal Software and/or Windows) on your PC temporarily. 2. If running vista, enable network sharing. If XP, enable sharing on your My Pictures, My Music & My Videos folders on C:. 3. Open Windows Media Player 11, go to tools -> options -> library -> configure sharing -> put a check mark in share my media to. 4. Make sure your PC is up and running when you turn on your DVR. 5. Turn on your DVR. Under menu you should see "Share Music, Photos And More" selection. 6. You should be OK to re-enable your Firewalls. If you have any problems, restart all equipment on both ends of the network, first the Router/Modem, then the PC(when it comes up, turn off Firewalls again), then a Menu or Red Button Restart of your DVR and when it comes up try again starting at Step 5 above.
If you have tried all of this, then I can only ask if you have read/reviewed the post in the following link? User obbit222 found "one of the solutions" for the Media Share menu not showing up. There are so many different PC's/Operating Systems/Firewalls/Routers/Networks/DVR's combinations/configurations that problems like these are often elusive as to the cause. http://forums.directv.com/pe/action/forums/displaythread?rootPostID=10493327
I wish I had a "definitive" easy solution for this but as I stated earlier, some users have gotten the menu to finally appear and some have not. This one is a real "buggger":0(

I tried everything I could find on this forum to get Media share to work with my XP service pack 3 machine and WMP11. VOD and Directv2pc run fine. No luck, could never get the music photos and more selection to show up on the Directv menu. Just for the heck of it, I downloaded and installed Tversity. Now it works like a charm, I see all my music, photos and videos and have no trouble playing any of them on my TV now. After installing Tversity, I didn't even have to reset anything, the menu just showed up immediatley. Is directv ever going to get this out of beta and release a real working application?

Media Share is not a Beta technology. The issue is people more than likely don't have their machine setup correctly and TVersity makes that simple. The requirements for Media Share is

This thread is beginning to sound like it says "if you are frustrated with trying everything you can to get your Media Share menu showing on your DVR.......install TVersity and see if it will work"?????????????

If you can't make it work without TVersity, you have something set up improperly. I would think that one would set it up properly first and then use TVersity for it's transcoding abilities. |

dcd, That advice is well & good for those of us who have encountered a plug n' play network services experience with possibly some minor tweaking, but I am afraid not very encouraging to those who have literally been trying for "months" without being able to get the Media Play "Music, Photos & More" menu to even display on their DVR. So, to get some type of initial Media Play access, the TVersity installation may at least serve as a viable option until they have the time to resolve their "basic root cause issue". So, that being said, would you not agree that if they install TVersity and all of a sudden their Media Share works fine(as reported by user gary300 above) then "proper setup" and or whether they use WMP11 or TVersity for viewing their media is irrelative. Forgive me as I am a "results oriented" type and not one to be a stickler for following rules or guidelines if they present frustration instead of delivery of goods:0)

When the Media Share screen appears, it says Beta. A finished, consumer orientated application would be truly plug n play without the user jumping hoops to get it to work. |

Gary, You are spot on, this is beta software in the finest tradition. Directv must have spent a part timers budget on this one. Although I've got mine working up to its limited abilities, it's lack of trick play on video, it's difficulty in setting up etc makes it obvious a lot more upgrading is necessary. This thing should work as a standalone and not require third party software to bridge the gaps. |

DJ, You asked: "would you not agree that if they install TVersity and all of a sudden their Media Share works fine(as reported by user gary300 above) then "proper setup" and or whether they use WMP11 or TVersity for viewing their media is irrelative. " Using TVersity to get up and going is obviously just fine. But, and this is a big but, if the new wave of features like MRV utilize the technology present in Directv2PC and Media share, then those who use a band-aid to cover over the splinter will be dead in the water. "Use TVersity to get rolling, but find the root cause of your difficulty and correct it" would be the best advice. |

dcd, I wholeheartedly agree with your last statement as the appropiate advice for users interested in the DirecTV network features. All three of the current features and as you stated potentially the future MRV feature all need your network setup to be compliant with "the basics". In my case, I had the Media Share WMP11 basic setup working and only installed TVersity because of my extensive home Video collection that is stored in the .WMV file format, which the native WMP11 would not play. The folks that have On Demand and DirecTV2PC working fine, but some obscure setting is preventing them from getting the Share Music, Photos & More menu on their DVR are a different scenario. Unfortunately, we both know that if we tell a user to install TVersity to see if it helps...and it gets them going...the likelihood that they will spend the time to go back and find the root cause is slim & none. That is until the "band-aid" prevents MRV from working and then they are back to square one until they find out what in their network configuration was their problem to begin with. |

As it turns out, the MRV function may not need any of the Media Share facilities to work. It looks like all that will be required is that the DVR's are on a network together. Please view this thread on the HD DVR forum:

gary300, It had been "speculated", even by the TECHKNOWGUIDES, that the MRV would "piggyback" off the successful refinement of Media Share. Now that there are some TECHKNOWGUIDES with "hands on" testing of the CE release of MRV(as pointed out in the conversation thread you referenced) that may not be the case and the D* boxes may communicate directly with each other over their network connection. BTW, FYI...you can right click, copy shortcut on any post's "link" and Paste it in another reply box(like I have done below). You can also use the "Related Content:" link below your entry to do that as well. I do not believe that Greywolf's answer to me was definitive. He gave me what is a stock answer from a user wondering how a network works. I don't think he understood what I was asking and didn't actually answer. He also admitted he hadn't played with the feature much. I think we need to wait before we conclude the MRV feature will operate without a computer involved. |

I was having the same problem. However, once I set up the media sharing in Windows Media Player, then I went into My computer, the various folders(my music, My albums, etc. right clicked the folder, clicked on network sharing and security, then "share this network folder" apply, then ok. Then I went to "Network places", and enabled "view Icons for network UPnP devices", and Voila, "Music, Photos & More appears on the Directv Menu. Although, I did reset my router, restart my computer, disabled my firewalls and restarted my dvr as suggested. Although, I think It might have worked by just setting the network sharings, and enabling the "view icons for network UPnP devices" |

Yes software like TVersity and PlayON both seem to setup easier than mediashare but I have gotten all 3 to work. Im currently using PlayOn because it allows Hulu and Netflix streaming right out of the box. Just a couple things to look at that might help. 1. Are you sure there is a media server running on the PC. Taskmanager should show a media server running as a well as Wmpshareservice. 2. When you rightclick on folders you want to share does an option to share with ... show up in the tab list. hope that helps
