Discussion Forum Post How do I record ONE episode when the same episode is shown
Jul 4, 2009 At beginning of post row.

Hi, how do I program the DVR to record programs such as SportsCenter, ComedyCentral,... when the same episode is available multiple times during the day?  When I click on Series or on All Episodes, ALL of the available episodes appear. I only want to record ONE episode, every day at the same time, not the same episode everytime that it is showen and would appreciate your help, how to do this? Thank you, Bob

Discussion Forum Post Never mind, I think I found the fix to my problem

This very problem has been addressed in numerous threads in the past.  This isn't the only program that has this problem, Comedy Central and Hardball are two others that come to mind.  The problem is that each of these programs broadcast multiple times each day and the broadcasts are identical, thus are technically first run.  The info these channels feeds to the Directv guide identifies each as first run.

Setting up a recurring manual recording is the foolproof way to go.  Menu -> manage recordings -> manual -> select the channel and time desired then select the recurring recordings.  M-F is typical.

I think probably when you refer to manual recording you refer to locating the program in the guide and pressing the "R" which is cumbersome to say the least.

This is a common problem with programs that broadcast multiple identical episodes each day.  Fortunately the solution is easy.

Go to Menu -> manage my recordings -> manual.  Select the appropriate channel, the times and the days of the week to record.  The manual setup is absolutely reliable and foolproof.

Yep, that's one workaround.  It's a problem every time Jon Stewart goes on vacation.

I just check my To Do List each week and delete those extra recordings from there.

Huh?  dallas 12345, your question has nothing to do with this thread.  Please start a New Post with your question, including more details about your equipment.

I'm suspicious that the parents are away and Dallas is trying to figure out how to bypass the parental controls password.  In any event, calling the 800 number is the only way, and they make you prove you're the actual account holder.

Sorry, but a manual recording is NOT foolproof.  What if the networks move the show's starting time?  Setting the DVR to record the program will likely get your show unless the change is so last minute it doesn't reach the schedule.  The manual program is going to record the time and channel you select just like a VCR, and you will miss the program.  What if the network broadcasts special showings of new shows?  A manual recording will not get them.  Record the show and delete the extraneous recordings.

I agree manual recording is not foolproof for the reasons you list above. I have been trying to figure a way to do this for a long time. I don't understand why you can't just record the first episode. I always check the first run option, but it doesn't work. Does Direct TV have any plans to fix this problem?

This is not foolproof. The record icon does not show on the guide. It does show in the to do list but this is confusing if you just look at the guide. I had Dish Net for years. Never had a problem recording one show of a series. I find with this DVR I must set all my recorded shows every 2 weeks because that is as far ahead as I can go. I must set every show for every night!!! Or go to the to do list and eliminate all the shows in the series I do not want recorded. Help me, please!

I believe that both of you are misunderstanding what a "manual" recording is. You apparently are going through the guide and manually adding each program in turn, thus the two week limit. Here is what a manual recording actually is: Menu -> Manage Recordings -> Manual Record -> pick the channel, pick the time, pick the frequency and hit the manual record button. The DVR will record at that time on that channel with absolute reliability. Did either of you notice that you were responding to a thread that was quite old? Programs that repeat several times each day encode the guide that each is first run, thus the DVR is recording all first run. Just set up the manual one time and forget about it.
