DirecTV requires a dish.

DirecTV is service by satellite, so a receiving dish is required.

However if the dish is damaged, removed for roof repair, etc. the service authorizations on an HDDV may function for a while. This would allow you to watch your recordings, or even use On Demand (internet connected), hopefully until the issue with the dish is resolved.
