We cancelled our service with direct and were told our equipment was obsolete so no need to return it where can I dispose of it and get it off my dining room chair?

If the boxes are non-returnable, you take to whatever local electronic recycling you have.
To be sure though, what are the models of each box?

I suggest you Not dispose of them so Quickly. Wait at Least 6 months to one year as you find they may charge your account. Better safe than sorry!

The HR54 AFAIK is still returnable, you own the WVB. Yes they can still charge you.

Shouldn’t they have sent a box to return if they wanted it?

Only if you are more than 10 miles from a participating UPS/FedEx store to scan them in and keep the receipt. If so you need to call them to get a box to take it to the post office.

Yes they can charge the account. If they do not get back returnable boxes back then you get charged the appropriate non-return fees. Canceling the account does not remove the existence of it.
The HR54 is the 3rd generation Genie so is expected to still be returnable. As for the wireless video bridge (WVB), that is an owned accessory so is not something you can return.
Sending a return kit is the old process. Since AT&T took ownership they changed the process to match theirs. You take the box to a participating FedEx/The UPS Store for the free return. Just need box and account number. Make sure to keep receipt showing they took possession.
