Yes.  If you replace or upgrade your HR44 you will lose its recordings. There's no way to transfer them, other than the "old fashioned" method of recording them to a VCR, DVD Recorder, or PC with video capture hardware/software.

Recordings are encrypted to the DVR and may not be transferred. VCR recording or any other recording that doesn't get blocked by HDCP is the only option if replacing a DVR.

There is no "upgrade" to the HR44 as the Genie is DirecTV's highest level of equipment. The Genie-2 (HS17) is actually a downgrade for most Genie users because it forbids other HDDVRs from being on the account.

A warranty replacement for the HR44 'might' provide an HR54 depending what is in stock. The only benefit of the HR54 over the HR44 is supporting a 4K Client. If you were to do a 4K upgrade for the Client, the HR44 would be complimentary swapped to the HR54 to be compatible. As there are only 2 true 4K channels (3 if you count the PPV one), I personally wouldn't sacrifice the capability of a full HDDVR for a Client.
