DVR runs all the time and will overheat

DVR runs all the time even after it has been turned off and I get a message that it is overheating and will shut off.

DVRs are never off only in standby as the hard drive runs 24/7 to receive guide data and buffer the channels.  If the vents are clear then you will have to replace it.

Well "off" is a standby mode. Otherwise it wouldn't be able to record or keep guide data updated when not in use.

Make sure not in cabinet or direct sunlight, nothing is on/under it, and that vents are not blocked or caked with dust. Otherwise you call DirecTV to get it warranty replaced for $19.95 delivery.

Be aware the normally offer upgrade options as an alternative. Sometimes it can be the better way to go, sometimes not (and some agents are overzealous with upgrades). What are the models of every box you have and which one is the problem one? This way you get some guidance before calling in.
