Having trouble with your DIRECTV remote?

Program Your TV or Soundbar

Having trouble with your remote? Trying to program your TV or Soundbar? Learn what can cause issues with your remote signal and how to program your DIRECTV Remote below.

Please note, the DIRECTV Remote may not work with all TV or Soundbars.

The Remote Signal

The remote uses light to send commands to the receiver. If the receiver is blocked, this can affect functionality of the remote. Also, tempered glass in some entertainment centers can interfere with the signal. For the best experience, the receiver should be free and clear of obstructions

Also, turning the brightness down on your TV can resolve most signal issues. The remote uses a “light signal! and intense light can affect commands.

Re-sync the remote

The easiest way to fix your remote is by pressing and holding the Mute and Enter button until you see “Applying IR/ RF setup” appear on the screen.

Reset Your Receiver

Resetting the receiver may restore remote functions. Near the access card is a red reset button, press and hold that until the receiver restarts.

Test Your Batteries

Over time batteries lose their charge. Before you change them, test them. Press and hold any button on your remote. If you see a solid green light, this means the batteries are strong. If the light is blinking quickly, the batteries are still good but may need to be replaced down the road. If it blinks slowly or not at all, the batteries will need to be replaced.

Note: If all of the above does not restore remote functionality, it may be time to replace it. Chat with our support teams by clicking here. There may be a charge for the remote if you do not have the Equipment Protection plan.

Program Your Remote

If the remote controls only your DIRECTV receiver but not your TV, you can program your remote by:

    • Pressing  Menu. Go to Settings and Help >> Settings  >> Remote Control >> Program Remote >>TV.

Select the brand of your TV. From there, you will be prompted with step by step instructions to program your remote. For additional help with programming your DIRECTV Remote use this online tool.

Unable To Program Your Remote?

Not all TV's will work with the DIRECTV remotes. Some may have limited functions like:

  • Controlling volume

  • Turning the TV on or off.

In some instances, trying other model codes may work for your TV. Searching other forums or online may help you find the best solution. If nothing works,  uou may need to purchase a true universal remote

Other programming info and options

Can't Wait For A New Remote?

If you are waiting for a remote to arrive, you can use the DIRECTV App to control your receiver.

@jlee629, this isn't really a remote control issue, so probably best to start your own new thread.

At any rate, be sure that you're selecting the "Favorite Custom Channels" that you've previously set up.  See the photo below (ignore the circled "Channels I Get" selection ....

So I was promised a tech today and i waited all day for one just to go through 3 people to tell me that they cancelled did I recive a phone call text or email nope sure didn't now I have to wait till Tuesday bull crap y'alls mistake not mine y'all fix y'alls screw up and do what you promise. I didn't switch to y'all for this to just go from one company to another for the same problem. Fix your mistakes and make them right if not come get your equipment and shove it. I shouldn't have to call around to find out that y'all canceled the appointment with out notice. Y'all should let your customers know and not have them wait y'all day for a tech y'all expect your payment on time I i expect my tech when I was promised not 3 or 4 day later oh wait I will pay my bill next year see how y'all like to wait.

DIrect tv remotes just SUCK. Only answer. I have had Direct Tv for years and have NEVER had a remote that works. Even bought an RF remote and set the receiver to match. You try to change channels and nothing happens. or the 2 works and it goes immediately to a infomercial channel. Sometimes the 1 works and it goes to a different infomercial channel. Then you push a button ONE time and it puts up 2 of that number. I have literally spent 5 anguishing minutes just trying to change to a flipping channel. They SUCK plain and simple and there is no FIX.

I have a problem with 2 of my remote controls the Universal Remote and the Genie Remote both have the same problem with only some of the keys working but not all, I can not program or reset the Remotes because only 3 numerical keys are working, arrow keys are also faulty only 2 work properly. DVR controls are also not working at all, I can not rewind, fast forward, pause the only function working is the stop button and that on both remotes!!!!! Batteries are fresh. There is too much coincidence that both remotes have the same problem and I have come to the conclusion that the receiver is the one causing these problems, I’m going to need a receiver replacement, I am paying 20 dollars a month for renting this equipment so don’t even dare to charge me for it and no I don’t have protection plan, why should I pay for something I pay to use! Is like paying rent for an apartment, landlord is responsible to pay for repairs.

"Tell" should be spelled t-i-l-l. it's short for until.

A former landlady seemed to assume that every problem I had could be attributed to user error when in fact an inexpensively manufactured remote control might be at fault.  I am fortunate that my control is superior to that of my landlady, whose channels do not respond to simple numeral changes.

Why do you say "y'alls so much?   The phrase "youse guys" should suffice.

The fact that both remote CONTROLS have similar problems might imply that you are inadvertently sending out bad vibrations.

@Hampton6, you may need to use the TV's remote or front/side panel buttons to change the INPUT back to HDMI1.
