Best way would be HDMI from HD receiver to TV and either optical or digital coax from HD receiver to the Bose system

nowhere do these sights or videos does it explain

you have to hook red and yellow and white to tv to allow

you to go to system and change audio settings to tv

i used audio optical cable from direct tv box to bose symtem so

i don't need tv on to listen to music stations

everything varies  depending on what sound system you have. what inputs it allows.

its best to look in the sound system manual to see what it can use

with current hdcp copyright, the tv must be on for the tv to output sound when using hdmi

this was not up to directv, but the content providers

If your bose doesn't turn off, check with bose or their customer forum. Not saying you can't find an answer here, as perhaps there is somebody here experienced with your system, but you normally wouldn't go to bose if your DirecTV box wasn't turning off.

The Bose turns on and off fine using the Bose remote. I just recently
switched back to Directv . Comcast's remote not only changed the volume,
but turned it on and off.

I had Directv for 10 years, it worked then too... so ask Bose?? really??
that's your response?

Just in case you might want to know the answer.   I got the answer from a knowledgeable woman on the chat.  The remote I have is a RC73, this is incompatible with the Bose 321.  She is sending me a RC73B which is compatible.  So going to Bose for a Directv problem, was not exactly the correct answer.

Sorry by that statement it was not apparent you were trying to turn it on and off with the DirecTV remote. I thought you couldn't get it to power no matter what you did.

I doubt that will fix your issue. The "B" version of the remote simply adds a backlight to the buttons.  Otherwise they're the same.  Keep us posted, though.
