How do I get DVRs for my apartment?

My apartment building just switched from Comcast to DirecTV. I had the full Xfinity service which I could watch something inn one room, then go to another room and pickup where I stopped. I think I need to get my own satellite antenna, but the apartment will not allow outside dish antennas. All I have now is just a few basic channels. They have some sort of connection to DirecTV that feeds the same thing to all apartments

You need to contact the MDU(Multi Dwelling Units)company that installed the system.  OTARD prevents landlords/HOA from stopping a dish install in areas under your direct control like patios/balconies.

As your apartment is an MDU, you might not have the option to do an individual dish because of that. You can still do a Whole Home DVR setup, either by Genie (most recent model HR54) or Genie-2 (HS17 and is a server tower) with Mini Genie Clients on the additional TVs. The concern would be is the quality of your MDU's install to make sure no bleedthrough of services between customers.

Yes Federal reguations (OTARD) make it illegal for them to ban satellite dishes completely. Normally you can install in area under your own control, but MDU may override that (still a dish even if serves the entire building).
