Should I upgrade from my Genie Gen2 equipment?
I currently have a Genie Gen 2 (HR44-200), several Mini's, and a HD DVR (HR24-100), and I'm wondering if I should ask for an upgrade. I have no idea of the newer equipment, and any suggestions would be appreciated.
I understand that the dish would probably be swapped out, and I hate to send someone up on our Wisconsin roof in the winter.
Thanks...........

FIRST THE INSTALLER WONT LEAVE THE LADDER HE OR SHE WILL ONLY INSTALL A DISH THAT CAN BE DONE FROM THE LADDER (OSHA REGULATIONS)
2nd keep in mind if you upgrage it will start your 2 year commitment over

I appreciate the quick response. Thanks
If the installer won't leave a ladder, how will I ever get my dish serviced or replaced? DIRECTV installed the dish at a location of their choosing and I would think they would accept responsibility to service or replace. This could be a real problem for me.
I doubt that it maters, but I do pay for the extra service contract.

To comply with new OSHA regulations, DirecTV no longer allows tech to leave the ladder. If you have an older install where the dish cannot be serviced from the ladder itself, then you would be responsible for any maintenance at the dish yourself, or arranging a 3rd party to do so, perhaps relocating the dish to where DirecTV could service it. Having the optional equipment protection plan does not make a difference as DirecTV cannot violate OSHA.
But as you have a Genie, the dish doesn't need to be swapped as that is current equipment. Only if you had very old MPEG-2 (SD only) equipment would the dish need to be changed as the last of those feeds shutdown in April 2019.
Having a 2nd generation Genie (HR44) and a HDDVR, but with several Clients, makes upgrade options easy. Replace a Client with an HDDVR. That will get you another HR24 which provides 2 tuners, 500GB recording space, and can be used independently from the Genie if needed. If your home is already setup with a SWM 16, as opposed to a SWM 8, then DirecTV should just be able to drop ship the HDDVR for you to swap yourself as you can already support the additional tuners. The Genie can only use up to 3 Clients at the same time since it shares the tuners after all. No monthly cost difference between Client and HDDVR.

Since you are asking for any opinion. DON'T do the upgrade.
Your current setup with HR44 and an HR24 is one of the "best" setup there is.

Upgrading a Mini Genie Client to HDDVR would be fine. But definitely do not upgrade the HR44 (2nd generation Genie) as the Genie-2 (HS17) is not worth it especially with that setup.

The OP is not having issues with their equipment. Just inquiring about upgrade options. As mentioned they already have a very current setup, just suggested to start replacing Clients with HDDVRs to get more reliability with no increase in cost. If they aren't having issues, answering their upgrade question with "dump DTV" doesn't seem very civil or useful. Whatever issues you may be experiencing may not apply to the OP here.

That is where we will disagree. My physical setup and account have been reliable. But I am against the restrictions that were built into the Genie-2. And yes I do agree that AT&T agents need better training regarding older setups that are still very common. Ending up with a Genie and 2 HDDVRs has worked out very well.

We can disagree but they send out refurbished equipment. From a an at&t agent says this if you read it. https://www.fiercevideo.com/cable/deeper-dive-directv-soldiering-despite-drastic-subscriber-losses

Of course they send out refurbished equipment. You return a box, they repair/replace what is needed therby using less resources. In the case of a DVR, probably just put in a new hard drive as other components theoretically could last longer. There is never a guarantee to get brand new never used equipment.
Why should they have every box thrown out just because someone used it when it is still serviceable? Doing that would be a waste of money and resources and just contribute to more landfills.
There are good agents and bad ones. A lot of good or understandable business decisions, with some questionable (like the Genie-2). Just because you have had a bad experience doesn't mean the same for everyone else. So saying they are all liars or nothing is reliable, are false statements because it does not apply to all.
To the original post that this thread is actually about, it is highly recommended to upgrade from Clients to HDDVRs to get more capability and reliability. If the setup has more than 3 Clients, then this would be more of a needed upgrade as a Genie can only use up to 3 Clients at the same time max. I personally would take a refurbished HDDVR over a brand new Client (if such a guarantee existed) as the tuners, recording space, and dedicated processing are vastly more valuable then a box being newer off an assembly line.

Well they sure wasted a ton of money on the new guide that can't be fixed. They are just throwing money at that, something that can't be fixed and they can't send oot new equipment.? Might as well be their excuse. They can't fix anything.

Anything at&t touches is ruined. Take what they did with DTV.
