Why do I need an equipment protection plan?

With this service I rent the equipment..  what is covered if something happens to boxes or dish, etc

 

 

They added protection plan onto bill..why do I need this it seems equipment should be covered if I am paying already to rent the equipment?

DirecTV has a support model similar to many other service providers.  You can pay a monthly support for their Equipment Protection Plan, which covers any problems with your Receivers, DVRs, dish, cabling, etc with zero cost to you for a site service visit.  Or you can pay a "per incident" fee, typically $20 for exchanging a defective DVR/Receiver, or $50 for a site service visit.  Your choice. 

 

They also offer a higher cost Protection Plan Premier that covers your TV and other AV equipment.

You own everything but the receivers to maintain and repair.
