Can’t get pass the checking updates in setup...
Setting up new box, can’t get passed the checking for updates part of setup. Gives error 80003-001 code and to try again later. Tried through WiFi, and Ethernet at 2 different locations, so it’s definitely not network related. Reset device multiple times and still nothing. Any suggestions?

It's not at all associated with ANYONE, as it was still factory sealed. It's gets stuck on looking for updates, then I do the 7 reset button trick, or 10 reset button trick. It's one of the ones that can't get to the right server for the updates, and I already stated it was brand new. I'm looking for some other 'trick', but I don't think there is one.

Just because it's new means nothing. It was registered to the owner at purchase time used or not.

My experience sounds very much like that of soulweeper. I spent hours upon hours of time trying to get past the "checking for updates" message. I sent a message to the seller on Ebay where I had purchased the box and she assured me that it was brand new and had never been registered. I finally threw in the towel and bought a refurb unit from AT&T and I was up and running in less than about 30 minutes.

The person that replied to my first post, obviously didn't read my post. Mine IS brand new, still sealed, and still had the protective plastic. They changed the URL that the box points to for updates, and boxes looking at the old URL can't get the updates.

When you subscribe to the service and purchase a unit the box is registered to you rather use use it or not. The serial number of the unit shows up in your account under devices. The owner needs to login to their account to deactivate the unit or it's just a brick.

The box looks for updates when first powered up, and that has NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS ISSUE. You can't even get to the login screen until it gets updates. This box isn't registered to ANYONE, so maybe you should do some research on this issue, before you act like you know everything about it. It has the old AT&T logo on the splash screen, it CAN'T get updates. PERIOD!

Seems like the box needs to be returned then. Unfortunately it sounds like it needs be in-house updated/reimaged if it is that far outdated.
The other issue is you got it from eBay. Even if you got it to update, you would then run into the issue as mentioned earlier. Those boxes get authorized to an account while they are still factory sealed at the time of the order, not after they are opened and have their first use. That is unless the person you bought it from deauthorized it from their account because they were selling it.
I understand authorization is not your current issue, but the update problem. Just mentioning as that would have normally been the next issue had you got the update to work. Hopefully the seller will accept back, but if not just chalk it up to a loss and get one through a reputable source.

I have talked to many people that have bought them on Ebay, and had no problems. The ISSUE is, it won't get updates, because the (Edited per community guidelines) at AT&T changed the server. THAT is the real issue. I filed it with Paypal, it doesn't matter what the seller accepts, he sold me something that is useless.
And no, I wouldn't have had an authorization issue.

Those people didn't get their boxes from Ebay recently then. Also, doesn't matter if the box is in plastic and sealed. Ebay sellers are not the Dtv Stream warehouse. Someone, at some point, purchased those "sealed" boxes and they were registered to an account at that time before Dtv sent them out to the person you purchased them from.

@Ludwick577 Did I ever say that Ebay is the DTV warehouse??? No, I didn't. And yes, these people got them Ebay at all different times. Stop focusing on what is NOT the issue. Where this person got ur from is completely irrelevant. The box WON'T UPDATE, and that has nothing to do with the box 'possibly' being attached to an account.....NOTHING, so save your (Edited per community guidelines). The boxes don't have the right URL, because AT&T are a bunch of (Edited per community guidelines).

Return box to seller. Get box (new or refurbished) from DIRECTV STREAM itself so it should at minimum be in-house updated to the correct web location to process updates upon hooking up.

@Juniper I don't like refurbished stuff, if I can avoid it. Lesson learned on this, but it's still AT&T's fault. Had I known, I would have at least got one that said Directv Stream on the box, not AT&T. I'm not paying them $120 for a new box. I have a dispute opened with the seller, with Paypal.

It is AT&T's fault that someone bough an AT&T TV box from them (so well before rebranding to DIRECTV STREAM), and the person held onto it so long that by the time you bought it that software was out of date?
If you got it directly from AT&T/DirecTV, I would have agreed their fault. But you didn't get from them but a 3rd party. That is between you and the actual seller.

I don't really care what you agree or disagree with. If they hadn't changed the URL for the updates, there wouldn't be thousands of bricked boxes out there. So yeah, it IS their fault that a box that has NOTHING wrong with it, can't get a software update. And don't tell me what anything is between, I don't need your input, I'm well aware of what the problem is.
