Has anyone ever used a third party remote for DirectTV Stream via Apple TV?
I just got DirectTV Stream. I have AppleTV. It is sort of possible to use AppleTV, via the tiny physical remote, to watch TV (the remote app on the iPhone does nothing). However, it is very clunky and tedious, and it is not possible just to go to the next channel (scrolling through the channels is not possible). Does anyone have experience with using a third party remote to control DirectTV Stream via Apple TV?

Like I said, the Apple TV box is limited to the remote commands that its own remote provides, even if you use an aftermarket remote that's compatible with Apple TV.
If you want to use a DirecTV Stream remote, you'll need a DirecTV Stream (C71K) box. You can get one from DirecTV for $120 or $5/mo, or cheaper on eBay.

The DirecTV Stream App on Apple TV is limited to the buttons on the Apple remote. Same with Roku and Firestick. Perhaps you would be happier with a DirecTV Stream box and its remote?

Maybe, but I couldn't find the information on the DirectTV web site, and the person I was chatting with to set up the purchase just kept repeating that DirectTV stream is compatible with Apple TV. It isn't urgent, so I would like to send an email to inquire, but cannot find an email address for such purposes. I'll keep looking, but it's hard to get past the automated chat bot, and other support options are obscure.
I did a search for "Apple TV compatible remotes". There are a number of alternatives to the Siri remote. If I could find out how much it costs to get a box and its remote I would have a basis for deciding.
There are a lot of good things about DirectTV, but accessibility of support is not among them.
In any case, thank you for replying.

Thank you for that information. It isn't really available on the DirectTV site. It doesn't cost that much more than a third party remote. I will look into it. This is all completely new to me, and your assistance is very much appreciated.
