Need help connecting old box

I have a directv box. It is silver colored. It says HD DIRECTV on it, and it is connected to dolby digital in some way.

It used to work, but it's been a few years, I don't have a manual, and I am confused. It is plugged into things in the wall and stuff. There is a directv access card inside of it.

When I turn it on, it is continuously stuck on a "searching for satellite signal" screen. The satellite signal works just fine for our other directv, so there is no issue with the satellite itself.

Is there anything I'm missing that I overlooked? The cables plugged in are: AC ~ IN 120V ~ 60Hz 40W, S-VIDEO OUT, and SATELLITE IN.

Sorry if this is confusing or in the wrong place, I'm just really lost.

That receiver is obsolete as DTV is shutting down the MPEG2 SD channels starting this month, you may be able to swap it for an HD receiver or upgrade to a Genie system.

All DirecTV HD boxes are MPEG-4. So that H20 does not qualify for the MPEG swap.

However the H20 is not fully Whole Home DVR compatible (non-DVRs H21 and up), so is not getting the full functionality that the HR54 has.

I would call DirecTV 1-800-531-5000 and get a warranty replacement. Just $19.95 delivery, or covered if you have their optional equipment protection plan. You would get an H24 or H25 depending on stock.

Alternatively you could upgrade and get an HDDVR (last model in stock HR24). No difference in monthly cost as you have all the receiver services since you have a Genie (HR54). Would be 2 tuners and 500GB recording space. Upgrade would come with a 24 month agreement of course. If upgrade is not free the one-time lease is $199, so in that case I would do the warranty replacement just to hold you until your next free upgrade. As a note only non-DVR models have Autotune, if that matters to you.

Is that so?! Pointless to try, then! I'll just have to get a new one. :] Thank you!

Look for the model number near the access card, or bottom/rear panel, and post it back here.

And what model number is your good DirecTV box?

Model H454 - 500 on the good one

For the bad one... the model number is H20... I think?

I just read that the H20 doesn't auto detect a SWM LNB so you have to manually select the SWM LNB in the sat setup menu and you need a band stop filter to remove the whole home.
