Why does my DIRECTV have no Sound?
Having optimal sound is crucial to enjoying your favorite show or movie on DIRECTV. Below are some symptoms you might be experiencing, and ways to solve them. You can also find helpful information on our Troubleshooting Sound Issues article.
One channel is experiencing sound issues
If only one channel is missing sound or there is sound distortion, it may be an issue with the broadcast network and will resolve on its own in a few minutes. Sometimes, Secondary Audio Programming (SAP) creates sound problems though.
If you're listening to SAP, try switching back to the primary language:
- Press INFO on your remote control to bring up the info bar on the top of your TV screen.
- Use the right arrow button to highlight Audio/Video.
- Select English Dolby Audio.
All channels are experiencing sound issues
The sound issues may be caused by the remote control being set to MUTE or audio/visual cables not being connected securely. Or, especially if you have pets, cables may be damaged and not working properly.
- Check the remote control - Press the volume up button on the remote control. If the volume doesn't increase when you push the button, you need to program the remote control. Check out the article Program your remote control to learn how to set up the remote.
- Check the audio/video cables - Are you running cables from the receiver to your TV through another device, like a stereo system? If so, follow these steps:
- Check that the device connected to the TV and the receiver are all turned on.
- On your remote control, press the TV INPUT button to cycle through TV inputs (such as HDMI). If nothing happens when you press the button, try programming your remote control. Check out the article Program your remote control for help.
- If the problem persists, try connecting the receiver to the TV.
- If the sound returns, the problem is with the device connected to the TV and receiver. Refer to the device manual for instructions on how to change audio inputs and settings.
If you're not running cables from the receiver to the TV through another device, the issue could be the cable. It may be an incompatible cable, or the cable connection may need tightening.
Problems with sound synchronization
Try these tips to resolve the issue:
- Try changing the channel on your DIRECTV receiver. Changing channels helps to match up the audio sound and video.
- If you have a DVR, rewind the program you are watching. Go back a few seconds, then fast-forward back to live broadcast.
- Double check that it is not the surround sound system. Try using the TV speakers only to test if the surround sound system is causing the issue. Refer to the manual for your surround sound system for extra troubleshooting help.
If you are still having issues after checking all sources, please let us know.

I have changed out HDMI cable from Directtv to tv. I have left the TV unplugged for over 60 secondss. I have checked all TV settings and that the remote is not on mute. I am a long-time Directtv customer and never experienced this before. Help would be appreciated.

I'm having the weirdest issue sound is not working on exactly one channel (Yes Network) sports channel for the Nets, Yankees.
I've tried restarting the app, TV, internet and nothing is working. Every other channel is working fine with sound. This has been going on for almost 2 weeks now. Please has anyone else encountered this?

Similar issue with any live program (e.g., Oscars, softball game, etc.). The audio consistently hiccups. If there 10 words in a sentence, I’ll get only 5. Doesn’t happen with recorded network programs (e.g., prime time shows, late night TV) or shows I’ve DVR’d. Only live programs are affected? Anyone else with that problem?

@Jeremy123 please make a new post including your receiver model, when this happened, how long has this happened, what troubleshooting have you tried, and does it affect all TVs or one TV? Thank you.
