Why is Picture Quality Low on some Starz channels?

Picture quality on the TV this morning (not online) on a few of the Starz channels is worse than awful.  It looks like 480 resolution.  A couple of the Starz channels looked okay, but a few were terrible and clearly not HD.  Yes, I know how to set the resolution.  I had to rent the same movie on Vudu so I could get good picture quality.  Viewed through the DTV app these movies looked fine, but on the TV they were extremely low resolution.  These were movies filmed in the last 2 years, so no reason to have such poor resolution.  Is this a DirecTV problem?

Let's work on the picture clarity with you @rockymtnhiker.

  • This issue was only limited to one room or was multiple rooms impacted?
  • Do you recall which channels and programming were impacted because like you said some were and others were not?
  • Have you checked these channels since then and are you still seeing the picture issue?
  • Is your equipment internet-connected and did you search if there was an on-demand version of the movies to see how they played?

Yes, a few of them are NOT HD quality.  Those that don't have HD will not have the "HD"  letters

They are ALL HD according to DTV.  No problem viewing them in HD online at DTV app, just not coming in HD on my actual TV.  Has to be a problem with their broadcasting.

What models are your boxes?

Do they each have the issue, or just certain ones?

Have you tried both resolution setting options (front of box and in menu)?

There is no guarantee that resolution through DirecTV app and receiver will be the same for all programs. Also the app is for on the mobile device only, not for TV use.

I only have one box.  Yes, I tried all the display settings.  I know how that works.  It didn't matter what I chose, they were all terrible.  HR44-500 model

Just checking on the settings as some don't know about both physical controls (available on most boxes) and menu settings. By "all" display settings I take it you made sure it is set to "Hide SD Duplicates" then.

I would toggle guide from "Hide SD Duplicates" to "Hide HD Channels" and then after exiting menu completely going back in and changing it back. Sometimes this reminds the box which version of a channel to pull in.

Verify coax is finger tight and then red button reset the box. Failing that the next step is unplugging power for at least a minute. That dumps the guide data so downloads it fresh (within 24 hours) and clears any bad data that may be stuck in memory.

With that I would also refresh service authorizations to be sure. www.directv.com/refresh

After reset and/or power cycle, I would verify the display settings are still set correctly just in case.

Can you give examples of the channels you're seeing issues with?

Please confirm if this is happening with all your receivers.

You can also try resetting your receiver to fix pixilation or picture issues.
