A new side effect
A week ago or so my service was rewired. I had a coax installation, now I have two STBs that are connected by cat 5 and the other two are wireless. This evening I had 3 channels recording and was watching a fourth channel. I tried to rewind and pause the program I was watching. But instead of rewinding or pausing I got a message stating that those services weren't available because too many channels were either being watched or recorded. I have never seen this message when recording 3 channels and watching a fourth when I had the coax. Is this something new or is it a side effect of the combination of cat 5 and or wireless STBs? If anyone has experienced this issue or know the cause please let me know.

Well, we all know the DVR is only supposed to be able to record 3 HD programs at once. To give you "trick play" it has to be recording the stream. I don't know how it chooses which of the streams it's not going to record but, as far as I know, it cannot record all 4 of them.

Nope, w/0SD/4HD Ingress profile, 4 HD programs can be recorded, I've done it many times.

If anything was recording after those 3, might have caught it when the next program was in soft padding when it occurred. Know previously users have been kicked off the live program due to 4 streams being used for the 3+1 show starting after the 3. Know I was until I stopped one the ending programs, then could exit to TV back to my live channel.
@baseballisback Has had some goofy things like this happening in a thread he started too.

Yesterday, I was watching & when the ad came on decided to check my DVR list. Happened to be on the hour. I was surprized to see four shows being recorded & still able to watch another channel.
My first thought was five streams. But, checking stats showed four authorized.
Returning to the DVR list showed two shows being recorded. So, I figure the soft padding was working better than it used to, where I used to get the stop viewing.
It seems like it automatically, kicked the live channel off the DVR. No, I was watching on the DVR. Also, it is the fifth stream into the house. Maybe it is a way of introducing five streams - only during soft padding.

Number of streams and trick play are two different things. I remember when we had 2 HD / 2 SD and the extra STBs couldn't do any form of trick play. Whole-home DVR was introduced in three phases (first phase was schedule. I think second was delete and third was pause/rewind live TV.)
Anyway, I remember being able to pause/rewind live TV on secondary boxes *if* I was recording and watching that show via channel 9999. If I wanted to watch a show from 8-10 and have trick play, I had to be recording it.
Number of streams were upgraded approximately the same time, but separately. I got the idea to flip my DVR to a secondary TV so I could have that extra HD stream on the primary TV. (It's now under a bed connected only to a Slingbox and the wall.)

I haven't noticed anything in a while.
If you're recording three different shows and get any sort of "too many streams in use" message, MAKE ABSOLUTELY SURE(!!!) that all your other boxes are off. I think part of my issue may have been that I was closing my Slingbox tab without turning that box off via the Slingbox remote
I'm not entirely sure, but it appears this... say you're recording two consecutive shows on the same channel. For 2-3 minutes, that might actually count as two streams. I'm not entirely sure on that.
