Black Screen and Red X

We have a black screen with a red X. We have reset the modem, wireless router, cable box, changed HDMI ports, etc. Reset all items with connections to tv and cable box. Any other suggestions are appreciated.

Ethernet connect the settop box to the gateway, have a TV or monitor connected to the settop box, and power up.  The box will go through a lengthy download and initialization process with a grey gear and progress indicator, which should successfully complete assuming the box is functional.  
Before returning the box to its original location, make sure the link back to the gateway is intact to avoid repeating the recovery process.
