Some things to look at...
Did you set the tv's network setting's DNS? Suggested DNS could be OpenDNS (208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220) or google DNS (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4).
Did you tell your tv to use the ethernet connection as it's current input (consult your tv user's manual for how to do that).
Ethernet cable should be plugged into one of the yellow ethernet ports on the back of the gateway. Might try rebooting the gateway after adding the tv "device". Pull plug for 15 secs and let gateway fully reboot.
Update:
You are asking about an internet connection for the tv right? Not just "normal" tv which hdmi (usually) connects to your dvr or receiver.
