Dark tv picture, etc.
We just switched from Comcast to U=Verse. The TV picture on my auxiliary TV is terrible! Every channel (HD) is different - mostiy whenever anything is dark - like in a dark house - you can't distinguish anything - and the skin tones are orange. Tech came out here - oh, he said, that's your TV - I have to use my tv remote and change brightness, color, contrast, etc. Well - that is just not true! As I said, every channel seems different no mtter what I do - some are even washed out! I went online and found that Uverse has this problem - so is it the cable - I don't know which I've got - HDMI or component -is it the bandwith - we have 10801 on both sets. We have a few more days on free tech service - but I do not want a runaround! I am not technically proficient - now have found out more than I want to know. Actually, I think our main TV has these problems - just not at severe. (My husband won't admit it).My set is a toshiba set - about 3 years old - not that big. What is happening. All I know is that when we had Comcast - I never had to do anything - picture was fine on all channels. HELP!

Viewing definitely benefits from setting the TV to a good picture. May well be different settings than Over the Air or another cable co.
I believe that HDMI connection does have more variability between channels. That is the picture is more sensitve to upstream settings. If you want a more consistent picture, use component cables.

Sorry, no I don't have to change anything and get great PQ on Uverse HDTV channels on HDMI or component on the 1225 DVR.
If you happen to have a 2250 DVR, HDMI will have what's called the black crush problem, everything is darker and very dark scenes almost disappear into blackness. Component will work just fine.
Here's a page that displays HDMI/component setups:
http://www.att.com/media/en_US/swf/uverse_center/uverse/downloads/att_connecting_service.pdf
Many of us early adopters of Uverse had HDNet test patterns to adjust our TVs for Uverse thanks to instructions from SomeJoe7777. But HDNet is no more (AXS). 😉

Well, thanks for answering - but when I change brightness, contrast, etc. from toshiba's remote - it may look OK for that one channel - but when I change channels - I have to re-set brightness, contrast, etc. - ridiculous - I did read that changing to component cable might work - but another person said it is the bandwith. Anyway - I'm calling U-verse on Monday - asking for Tier 2 support - the people who first answer seem very, very inexperienced. But I plan to get to the bottom of this - yes, it costs less - but what good is having a TV with terrible picture quality!?

If you want competant people to help, contact ATT Uverse Care on the link in my signature.
Send them a private message, on this link, and they should be able to give the help needed to solve your Uverse PQ service problems. They are available M-F 8am-11pm Eastern time (also around on weekends), response may take up to 2 business days.
This is not the regular CS/TS phone people, but the social media Community Specialists that know the people to contact to get things done. I personally know as they've helped me on a DVR swap.
Include your account#, email address and a good phone # (land or cell) and time to contact you on. Check the blue PM envelope, upper right on every page, for their reply. Good luck 😉

Well, a tech person is coming out - but I have limited hopes. I'll tell him to switch to component but thiss is so annoying. Thanks.

Its the compression and codecs U-Verse uses. It makes flesh tones very bland and darks/grey all messed up. The one downfall of U-Verse, picture quality. If you get a good picture with another provider, roku device, xbox, blu ray, etc. common sense says its U-Verse and not your "tv settings".

No it doesn't, everything looks great here on my Panasonic plasma I've set-up more than 6 years ago for Uverse. Had HDNet then that had test patterns they played to adjust TVs, but alas no more HDNet. 😉

Plasma is the exception because it doesnt have pixels. However plasma's run allot hotter and use more energy, but the picture quality on plasma's are great, too bad they are just about phased out. For the rest of us with LED, LCD, and even IPS screen's.. we have a bit to be desired.

I'd agree 100% on any LCD, LED (just an LCD w/LEDs as lite sources) or IPS LCD are inferior to plasmas and the HDNet test patterns could be a big help for them.
In winter, the heat is great from the plasma, in summer I just aim the window AC at my recliner. The electricity is not that much more for the plasma and can afford it for the better PQ.

In the meantime you can search how to do a non disaster recovery to correct 40% of the darkness.

It's the 2250 and N-D disaster recovery will correct 100%, but the next regular reboot will just bring it back.
Nobody has posted the curent download ends the crushed black problem on the 2250 that I'm aware of here. I have it here, but have a sludgy 1225 after the 2250 died w/a red x and screwy link lite on when ethernet was disconnected.
If the DVR functions are still not working, try a Non-Destructive Disaster Recovery.
Unplug the power cord of the DVR from the wall or from the back of the box and wait ten seconds. Plug the DVR back in.
When three white dots appear on the screen, unplug the DVR again. Repeat this process two more times.
Plug the DVR back in on the third time and leave in. Three white dots appear followed by a gear with a status bar at the bottom of the screen.
If the Disaster Recovery screen does not appear, repeat the steps above. If the Disaster Recovery screen appears, wait until completion.
If the Non-Destructive Disaster Recovery does not work, follow the steps for a Force Disaster Recovery
Will not erase recordings, take a long time, can be upto 20-30 mins or so. Good luck 😉

I just switched to unversed and my picture quality went to pot. They are blue or dark gray or not clear. It was a problem immediately upon being connected. Three different tech can’t fix it. Tell me it is the tv and it changes all the time frombetter to worse! They have a problem and won’t admit it!
