Red X

I have used all the tricks and hints to reset my box and still a big Red X shows up. Now what?

All of these tricks?  If so, call tech support (800-288-2020) and get your dvr replaced.  If you did those "tricks" and ended up doing a disaster recovery then you already lost your recordings so you go nothing to lose.  Disaster recovery or replacing the dvr loses all the recordings but not your scheduling.
