Screen resolution setting issue with local broadcast channels. Atlanta Uverse
Screen resolution setting issue with local broadcast channels.
I am in ATL and the feed from the U-verse set top box is cutting off the edges of some channels. It seems isolated to local broadcast channels like ABC and PBS.
for example on the football game I'm watching the score, down indicator, game clock etc should be in the lower right corner - all I can see is the left edge of that box.
I checked the 4 aspect ratio setting on u-verse and it is clipped off on all settings.
My Tv is one year old and is capable of 1080.
Connection cable from U-verse to TV is HDMI.
Other football games on the ESPN channels are not clipped off.
The public TV stations 8 and 30 also have some info clipped off of the edges.

Hi @kalfaz,
In the past, this has been related to the zoom feature. This may help.

@kalfaz - As att says, this is usually caused when the ZOOM is Zooming on a full screen channel because it persists until manually changed.
But, it would affect all channels. Perhaps it is just not noticeable on other channels. So, it must be checked - The ZOOM/Enter/CC button is located to the right of the Zero.
Select zoom & see that it is set at. Set it to Normal.
If it is a one channel problem it is the feed from that channel.

@kalfaz, do you have the HD technology channels (channels greater than 1000)? If so, is there some reason you're watching channel 8 and 30 instead of 1008 and 1030 (their HD versions)?
Some stations provide a SD feed which is down-scaled HD feed with the "wings clipped off" to make it 4:3. Leaves black bars on the side. Anything that was outside the 4:3 area is gone. Other stations will shrink the picture so that the full width of the picture fits in the 4:3 area, leaving black bars on the top and bottom.

I do not have the $10 HD package.
Are you saying that the HD package will fix the issue?

If you don't have U450 (HD included) or pay the HD fee, you are NOT getting HD programming.
SD programming is 4:3. Your HD TV is designed for 16:9. Unless you stretch out the program or the network stretches it out, you're going to have the black bars on each side. Sometimes you'll see letterboxing in order to have a program fit the 16:9 screen.
Get HD programming if you have an HD TV. Or OTA HD programming (local channels) is free with an antenna.

@kalfaz - RE: Are you saying that the HD package will fix the issue?
Yes, the HD picture fills the screen - No cropping.
Prior to the digital conversion the stations broadcast a 4:3 aspect picture. HD is wider - 9:5. They had to struggle with how to support both. Step by step transition.
I believe, they are at a t point where they pluck the 4:3 picture out of the middle of the 9:5 picture. When you get HD, note that the station graphics are in that box.
You have a couple of stations that need to adjust their eqpt.

@aviewer So when did 16x9 HD become 9x5 HD?
All SD coming from newer HD feeds will be smaller 16x9 images floating in black space on all 4 sides.
Actually it's probably the wrong aspect ratio in the TV. 😉
