Translating spanish to english

Have you checked Info>Audio Language for a choice of English?  Know many English shows have a Spanish choice there. 😉

It's set up right.  I was hoping for an option to translate out loud as they are speaking.  Guess that's too much.

You have to realize that there isn't some magic software that converts what the people are saying into English and then displays it on the screen; it has been typed in by somebody in advance (except for a live show, but in that case, the translation lags behind the picture a little).

In theory, they could have something that "reads out" the caption text, but then, everybody would sound like Stephen Hawking.

Wow...you made me even more hopeful.  If they are typing it in then they could be speaking it instead.

I understand what you are saying.  Thanks for answering.  Sometimes there is technology that I don't know about available.  I figured it didn't hurt to ask.

I have to say, that was an interesting quirk that always struck me as odd...  MOST tv shows produced in english, often have a spanish SAP track available..   YET, programs done in spanish, and keep in mind, I am talking about shows produced in the united states, do not seem to ever have an English SAP track.

No big, mind...  simply caught my attention, and scratched my "wonder why they do it that way", itch.

First, as to the question at hand.  There isn't a way to have the caption of a secondary language converted to audio.  In tv shows of earlier decades, the characters who would have spoken a foreign language merely spoken English with a heavy accent.  This wasn't very realistic as two characters communicating who both spoke the same foreign language would hardly be speaking to each other in English.  This is particularly true when the conversation was intended to be kept private from those around them that didn't speak their language.  The shows produced today are trying to make it seem more realistic, so the characters use the language that they would use in a real situation.

The question of SAP usage has also bugged me for a long time.  In the Los Angeles area we have about 7 foreign languages used by over the air broadcasters.  SAP isn't used by any of them.  The only times it is used is to convert English into Spanish.  Some of these channels probably wouldn't expand their audience much by using SAP to convert their shows into English (like the Armenian channel), but many of the shows might have a much broader audience that would more than pay for the cost of providing a second audio channel.
