Get Antenna Channel

We would like to receive the Antenna channel.  All our neighbors that have other cable companies have this channel and it is not a premium channel.

This is most likely a digital sub channel in your market. ATT does not carry any digital sub channels.

Hi @ss1990 - Yes my wife continually asks about Antenna TV as well, since they bought the rights to re-air the Tonight Show, with Johnny Carson.  In Indianapolis, they are a sub-channel.  Comcast and Bright House carry them but not U-Verse.  You may have luck with an antenna but you then must buy a Tivo or a DVD-recorder to record them.  It would be much easier if AT&T just offered them.

@Fox Mulder - AT&T does carry sub-channels in a handful of markets - when it is a one of the big 4.  Biloxi MS is one.  UV carries WXXV 25.1 (FOX) and 25.2 (NBC).  They do not carry 25.3, which is the CW.  Subscribers in Biloxi request that UV carry the CW at least once every two months or so.  With the repack of the UHF band, these situations are going to increase.

I would invest in a good rooftop antenna.

Apparently, people forget about OTA programming.  Not only for channels that they otherwise cannot access but also if there happens to be a service outage for any length of time.

We've been lucky.  For the last few years any outages are short-lived but if my Uverse TV goes out for more than a few minutes, I have a set of rabbit ears and I can watch OTA channels!

While rabbit ears may not work for everyone (a fact I was unaware of), a good option would be a rooftop or attic antenna.

Don't mess with old people.  The older we get, the less "Life in Prison" is a deterrent.

If one goes the OTA route with an antenna designed to receive stations in their area, recording them is another concern.  Both Tivo and Channel Master offer high end, multi channel DVR's for about $300(!).  BUT they are as good as cable/IPTV/DBS DVR's and in Tivo's case, maybe better.  Of course the antenna is additional. 😉

If money was no object, I'd consider a Tivo Roamio and a nice rooftop antenna but money is an object and the wife doesn't want to see an antenna. 😉

If my UV is out I just need to be entertained!  Recording is not even on my radar.

Right but if I had that setup, my wife would ask me to record Antenna TV, each night for Johnny Casron.

That setup plus Netflix or Hulu might be a cordcutters dream.

For some of us, even this is not an option - I for one live about 50 miles from both the San Francisco and Sacramento transmitters, and there are hills surrounding my house - and as I live in a townhouse, roof access is out of the question (and an attic antenna still isn't high enough to get anything).

It would be easier if they would just add the subchannels..... or find another way of providing content.

I have seen some weird maps regarding OTA.  Some actually get more coverage since the Digital transition, some aboiut the same but many, much less.

EDIT: Here are the links to the maps that show pre and post transition coverage.

@dhascall   That signal is not getting over the mountains where he is, I know I've been out there many times, from 1992 to 2005, and even the FM stations do not get there from SF and barely from Sac.  @That Don Guy  sounds like down by Modesto or little farther South? Smiley Surprised

Yes sir @mibrnsurg - I know all about terrain blackouts.

That said, there are some that use mountains to their advantage.  There is a phenomenon known as Knife Edge propagation, where RF signals diffract around mountains and other high obstructions.  A radio "DXing" friend went to college in a mountaineous area and they found a sweet spot, up on a high hill, were they would reliably receive TV signals over 150 miles away.  This was not weather nor ionospherically enhanced.  If they moved a few hundred feet, any direction, the signals would be lost.  Many valley town's, early CATV systems had their receiving antennas situated using knife edge effect.

Too bad that a prediction map could not be created with as much wave study as has been done, with the map being based upon a station's contour map and tower data.

Maybe on analog, but no way on these low powered digital transmitter/antenna combos these days.  Their coverage maps are not what they were then.

Back in the 50/60s we would get PA stations here in metro Detroit during certain atmospheric conditions, usually in Spring.

In 80s. when I was driving an East Side cab, in summer we'd get the Cleveland cab company here on East side of Detroit.  Those of us that had 'big' radios could even converse w/the Cleveland dispatchers.  Talk about confusion. Smiley LOL

Yup, the Berkley Hills (pretty tall to call them hills) to the South cutting off SF and to the North that climb up I-80 to get to Sacremento's level.  Their signals fly right over you down in that bowl. Smiley Surprised
