U-Verse TV shutting down in 2 years
Is at&t requiring every u-verse customer to change over to DirecTv within the next (2) years? Just (2) young gentlemen come by representing at&t.

As far as I know that is not correct. Were these 2 men selling directv? If they were, they were trying to get you to switch to dtv so they could get a sales commission.

The information about Uverse was told to us by a DirectTV sales rep at the front door as well. This happened a few weeks back. Similar information about uverse was also implied to me by a AT&T uverse CSR on the phone. From those two different sources, it sounds to me like uverse via the wires will be diminishing within the next 5 years as AT&T attempts to migrate most uverse users off of the wires.

AT&T will do what ever they can that makes the most money. If that means turning their back on uverse tv..they will. Just ask some DSL folks if at&t will do this.

Actually, what ATT wants is every customer to have the total experience which means both wires and satellite. ATT can deliver much more content over satellite yet the wired connection is equally important to deliver on demand content as well as numerous other services that can't be done over satellite.

Except there are a significant number of customers and potential customers that
CANNOT get LoS for a sat dish of any kind.
Instead of screwing around with obsolete satellite tech why doesn't AT&T just
do what is necessary and install FTTP at all homes in their footprint. Actually they should have been doing that for the past ten years but were dragging their heals and wasting time with
FTTN copper last mile service....if they had their footprint on FTTP customers wouldn't need to worry about receiving their U Verse TV service over decrepit copper or a dish with no Line of Sight. I suppose that is what happens with short term thinking...
I have repeatedly told AT&T that until my home receives FTTP I will not be upgrading at all.
My home has no LoS for DirecTV.

@ham3843 I'm sure the reason for not doing FTTP everywhere is cost.

It cost AT&T a fortune to acquire DirecTV which is really obsolete, and even so they will lose the ability to offer more expensive and more profitable U Verse TV products because a signficant number of customers or potential customers cannot get LoS, no matter what, that all goes away with FTTP. There are plenty of potential customers that would buy the more profitable product IF they didn't have the obstacle of LoS.
Seems that it would have been a slight more costly move initially but a more profitable one for the long term if AT&T simply covered 80%+ of their footprint with FTTP.

@ham3843 I get great Uverse TV over what you call decrepit copper on VDSL 2 400' from the VRAD. 😉

@my thoughts
While I don't like many of the things you posted business-wise with AT&T as usual it is hard to argue with your facts and reasoning. Thanks for the interesting post. I appreciate your
thorough presentation on the matter.

@my thoughts Puhleez! Here's a silver sob story: In 1980, our local Hunt brothers were buying up all the silver and prices rose from $13 to over $50 an ounce. Guess who's husband thought it was a good idea jump in? I think he bought at around $50, apparently unclear on the 'buy low/sell high' concept. When the bottom fell out, we didn't sell thinking maybe it would climb back up. It didn't and I've still got that silver.
My daughter, who is now a financial advisor, shakes her head every time I mention it. If gets anywhere near the $50, I'm going to be FIRST in line!
Needless to say, that's the last time I let him make any investment decisions!

Just FYI, another DirectTV sales rep (third party contractor) came to the front door yesterday with the same pitch about switching Uverse video customers to DirectTV. The same pitch is thrown from the DirectTV rep hounding customers near the A/V department at Wal-Mart. "You are already with AT&T Uverse?! Great! It can be an easy switch with no termination fees. I think AT&T will be dropping Uverse wire for video customers soon..." I understand the idea of cross-selling your current customers, but I, for one, am starting to get annoyed with salesmen telling me that AT&T will be dropping Uverse dropping video unless it is really going to happen.
