WGN America Now In Chicago

A U-vere forum subcriber, who lives in the Chicago area, wrote me a personal email stating:

"

"I was browsing thru my channels last night, and I noticed that WGN America is now on channel 180 (in the Chicago area), not sure when the change occurred but it's there for the time being.

It wasn't located there as recently as October, so it must have been a recent change. I wonder if this is a good sign that negotiations between WGN and UVerse are going well."

Up until recently, regular WGN-TV was seen only in the Chicago area on U-verse channels 009 for SD and 1009 for HD. The Chicago area could not receive WGN America.

The rest of the country, who has U-verse as a provider, could only receive WGN America on 180 SD and 1180 HD. Evidentally, that changed in the Chicago metropolitan area in the last few days according to the forum subscriber's email.

I callled WGN-TV this afternoon, and spoke to the program coordinator who confirmed that WGN Amercia was now available in the Chicago metropolitan area on 180 and 1180. He knew that this was going to occur, and said I was the first to report to him that WGN America was now on the air in the Chicago metropolitan area, at least on U-verse.

To my coorespondent: a contract was signed a week or so ago by AT&T and the Tribune Company.

But, as for those of us outside of Chicago, it's only WGN America for the foreseeable future??

And I thought a deal was finished...what did I miss??

The deal is done, see

et al.  And, yes, WGN America in Chicago is probably a result of that deal.

Do not expect WGN (local) outside of the Chicago area.  I believe that WGN America's raison de etre is to be a version of WGN that doesn't have the sports that can't be shown outside the Chicago area.  The old Superstation model (used by TBS and WGN) is no more.

When I spoke to the WGN-TV program coordinator yesterday I told him that I was very unhappy that WGN America no longer carried the Cubs and White Sox telecasts. I indicated to him that was the only reason that I watched WGN America.

If the forum members remember, we had the Cubs multicasts three baseball seasons ago. That was droped two seasons ago.

The multi-casts were great, if only because you could flip over if "your team" was playing at Wrigley and go commercial-free.

I remember one time, it was a Cubs home game vs the White Sox on WGN, but the multi-cast wasn't used because it was a WS broadcast! And yeah, it took me a moment to figure out why the multi-cast wasn't being used.

By not putting Braves or Cubs games on national TV, I'm sure they're selling a few more MLB subscriptions that way.

It'd be cool to get WGN Chicago even if Cubs games were blacked out...but I'm sure that would lead to a: "The guy told me I could get Cubs games! I have U-450, HD Premium AND the fastest internet!" posts... (As if your internet speed would have something to do with it??)

I keep forgetting to post this in regards to WGN  America. In September, there was a small article in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch stating that WGN America was going to be a sub-channel of KPLR-TV Channel 11 in St. Louis appearing on channel 11.3.

I called KPLR to verify this article, and the person that I spoke to said it would within a week.  I kept checking to see if 11.3 went live. The bottom line is that it never happened, and has not happened as of today.

When I spoke to the Program Coordinator at WGN-TV Channel 9 in Chicago, I asked him about WGN America appearing as a sub-channel on Over The Air television. I told him about the Post-Dispatch article, and what the KPLR representative told me.

He stated that WGN Americca is only a cable channel. It would never appear as a sub-channel anywhere. Obviously, the Post-Dispatch and the representative at KPLR were totally incorrect.
