DirecTV is monetizing cancellation refunds by selling our personal information to third parties
I canceled my account and was due a refund. Instead of immediately, or at the end of that month’s billing cycle, crediting the credit card that they had been auto-billing, 74 days later (!) AT&T sends me a prepaid Mastercard with my refund. It was accompanied by nine pages of fine print revealing how my personal information is being disclosed to “Sunrise Banks, N.A.” (the card issuer) and all of its “affiliates”, with no possibility for me to opt out. It also says that “a monthly maintenance fee [of $3] will be charged on a monthly basis in the month following the card expiration date”. If you want to get a paper check or transfer the money to a bank account, it says “Go online” but doesn’t tell you the URL to use. When you call the “Contact us” number, none of the menu options offer the choice of speaking to an agent.
