When the man came to install our direct tv box he didn’t program the remote to the tv to turn the volume up and down. And I’m not sure how to do it.

On your DirecTV box press MENU and scroll to the SETUP Menu. Select REMOTE SETUP. Follow the on-screen prompts to program the volume buttons to your TV.
