On the remote, Press and hold MUTE and SELECT at the same time until the light flashes three times. Then press Press 9 8 1 and SELECT. The remote will flash four times and should now be reset.
Then point your remote at the receiver and press the vol switch and it will start the onscreen instructions.

What DVR/Receiver model number?
You should be able to follow the Remote Setup instructions under the DVR/Receiver's Setup Menu.

@goldw1800 's instructions will work for the RC7x remotes, not the RC6x remotes.
