No Gemini? Leaving DirecTV

I've been a DirecTV Stream customer for a few months now. I just found out about the Gemini Air device. It sounds like a much needed improvement to using Amazon FireTV to access to access the DirecTV stream. After chatting with customer (no)service. I learned that since I do not have a contract, I am ineligible to receive a Gemini Air device from DirecTV.

This is nonsensical, and smacks of coercion and pressure to enter into a binding contract that was not mentioned when I signed up for the service. I now plan to discontinue DirecTV Stream as soon as I can find a suitable alternative. Does anyone have a suggestion for a similar service that offers a full function remote? I would like something that allows the remote to change channels by entering the channel number directly.

Thanks!

It’s only nonsensical to users that don’t understand what they signed up for.

They offer Stream for customer owned equipment no commitment service, separately offer Via Internet with leased equipment and contracts, and of course Satellite with leased equipment and contracts.

What customer service do they need to provide for your subscription TV you signed up for with no commitment to use your own equipment, that outlined exactly what you were getting and using which you chose? IMO, it’s actually good customer service to tell you the service you signed up for and don’t want to change to the one that would be more lucrative for the company.

It’s like whining you signed up for Amazon Prime but didn’t get a FireTV stick to stream it on so you’re switching streaming services.

Also gotta laugh at having been a user for “a few months.” There are DTV satellite customers since the 90’s that don’t get jack for it. Nobody would care if you switched, you’d probably be saving the company time and resources tbh.

Horribly convoluted way to (not) provide customer service! Why not just sell the (Edited per community guidelines)ed Gemini to non-contract users? Unfortunately, I will be replacing DirecTV Stream with a different service as soon as I identify a suitable replacement.

Well, you can purchase the device on eBay or Amazon anyway, like everyone else does.

I have been unable to locate the Gemini Air device on Amazon, or eBay. Only the Osprey external "box".

Available on Solid Signal:

And, on eBay:

Thank You! The one on eBay seems to be only the HDMI dongle, and does not include the remote control. Checking out the one on Solid Signal now.

Just pointing out when signing up the terms say for Directv via Internet if you cancel service within 14 days you can be refunded but if you do not return the Gemini Air you will be charged a $120 non-return equipment fee per device. Cancelling the service does not disable the Air itself from working.

I didn’t look at the third party prices for buying a Gemini Air but I’m sure any bright person can figure out how to get one for under $121

On a side note, I do find it amusing people want these devices enough due to the functionality and remote that they feel it should simply be purchaseable outside of the specific service DTV offers it with. It’s like enjoying a cable box and remote so much you want to just buy them (Edited per community guidelines)! Can you imagine Comcast or Spectrum receivers being available and so good that people would actually be willing to just buy them from the company for upwards of $150! Then have the gaul to complain if they couldn’t get them without signing up for the required service they are leased with. 🤣

“I want that Xumo device Xfinity but I don’t actually want the service it is offered with. It’s ridiculous you can’t just sell me one!”

”I want your router and mesh network, but I don’t want to sign-up for the service that includes them!”

This would have been a blasphemous thought a few years ago. Says a lot about remote designs from streaming devices for live TV services.
