convert uverse cable to ethernet
I converted from U-verse to DirecTV Stream but am using it with my Samsung Smart TV over wireless, so I don't need a DirecTV device. But I'm thinking that having a wired connection might make for better streaming. My question is can I connect the existing, but decommissioned CAT-50 cable that used to be connected to the Uverse box, to my Samsung TV? It has USB ports, and HDMI ports, but would I need some sort of device between them? I tried connecting the old U-verse line to my laptop, but the laptop didn't recognize it as a network connection.

Woohoo! I discovered the ethernet port (been a while since I bought the tv, so I hadn't been behind it) and it did in fact create a network connection. And the picture radically improved! Thanks for the help!

CAT-50?! Do you mean CAT-5E or just simple Lan/Ethernet cable?
Samsung Smart TVs perform super poorly with DIRECTV STREAM so a good upgrade for you would be a streaming device like a Fire Stick, Roku, or Apple TV. You can even try out the DIRECTV STREAM Osprey Box which does indeed have the LAN/Ethernet plug to have a wired connection to the router.
If your computer doesn’t recognize the U-verse Line, I doubt any streaming device will either. I suggest you trace down the line and be sure it is properly connected to the router/access point (if applicable). There are also wire testers so if you are unsure of the quality/integrity of the cable be sure to test it.
As far as your question, yes, a physical wired Ethernet cable always positively impacts streaming speed and reliability. Therefore, less buffering and quicker response times. If the Samsung TV doesn’t have an Ethernet adapter or actual Ethernet output, it likely doesn’t support Ethernet. If you want us to verify drop your Samsung TV model number.

Yes, the cable is labeled CAT-50, which is part of why I'm asking. I wasn't sure if this was some sort of proprietary cable used for the U-verse video. It's a Samsung Smart TV (Samsung - 50" Class - LED; - 7 Series - 2160p - Smart - 4K UHD TV with HDR
Model: UN50RU7100FXZA) and generally I've had good quality video, but recently the picture will suddenly get blurry, and none of the adjustments I can make seem to help.
The cable isn't connected to any of the ports on my router, so I'm not sure where it terminates, whether it's coming directly from an outside source. I have AT&T gigabit service, so in general I get pretty good downstream speeds.
