Digital audio
On the back of my DIRECTV streaming device, between the Ethernet and HDMI connections, there is something labelled "digital audio". A grey plastic thing partially covers an opening, and a red light is visible. I am wondering if this is a connection that could be used to hook up the streaming device directly to a surround sound system, instead of getting the sound from my TV. If so, would I need to break off the grey plastic thing? Is this an optical or coaxial connection? I could not find any mention of this in the instructions or videos for Directv. Thanks.

On inspection of the back of my box, the grey cover when pushed in (does not need to be removed) it reveals a glowing red optical outlet for audio. If you have an optical cord I would try connecting it to see if it would work for your surround sound. If you do try to connect your surround sound through this method please let us know back here in the forum how it went and if it worked for you or not. Thanks

That is an optical connection. Not as good as hdmi. If your audio system is above 5.1 hdmi is better. My device connected to avr than to arc hdmi on tv. Can play atmos sound track.
