Let's follow these steps to make sure the volume works with your device:
1. Go into settings/system through the home button.
2. Then to Remote & Devices.
3. Go to TV remote and make sure it is set up for Sony.
Let us know how it goes.

Make sure Sony is chosen. I've seen people that choose Sony then it gets changed to the next selection out of the blue.

Make sure HDMI-CEC is off...and "switch volume control" is set to TV

Look, everything else that I have works perfectly. I have everything connected properly, with no issues, except the volume control on the stream remote. Don’t you think that maybe I might have a bad remote, I know it’s rare but possible?

The remote might be bad. U can buy a new one from amazon cheap. Or contact Dtv stream live chat and see if they will send you a new one. I was just asking about having HDMI-CEC off b/c I accidentally enabled it a few months ago and my volume didn't work. Sometimes people miss things.

ONE SOLUTION TO THE DIRECTV STREAM REMOTE CONTROL VOLUME PROBLEM!!
Since subscribing to Directv Stream several months ago, I have experienced several intermittent episodes when the volume and mute functions stop working but everything else continues to work flawlessly. I have spent several hours at this point with DTV technicians using their "remote viewing" in an attempt to correct the problem. We go through all of the troublshooting procedures but nothing works.
Last night, I ran across an earlier post describing a simple procedure that has appeared to work for a few of us. I tried it this morning and it worked for me. I am totally mystified as to why the DTV technical support specialists do not begin troubleshooting with this this simple procedure. In their defense, they do dance around it but fail to emphasize one critical feature of the procedure (see Bold comments below). Also, I'm assuming that you've already gone through the initial Setup and paired your DTV Streaming remote.
Here it is, step-by-step:
1. Go to Home>Settings>System>Remote and Devices>Program Your Remote>TV.
2. Make sure that Remote Programming is turned ON; Switch Volume Control is set to TV; HDMI-CEC Volume Control is set to Off; and Power Off Devices is set to ON.
3. Click on TV>Standard>and then enter you brand of TV.
4. Using your television remote control, reduce the Volume to 0.
5. A test is provided where you will be asked to report a noticeable volume increase. Do not try to do this with your ears! Instead, look at the TV screen to see if the previously set "0" volume increases to "1" or more (mine only increased by "1") when the test is run.
6. When/if the volume number increases on your screen, indicate Yes. The program with then test the Mute function, and your finished!
The DTV technicians (now counting 4 of them so far) failed to emphasize that the procedure should be performed as explained in items 4-5 above. Instead, I was turning up the volume on my TV and listening for slight increases. Apparently, the increases are so slight that it requires observing a visual increase from 0 to 1 on the TV screen.
I hope that this slight but very critical modification of the "Standard Method" will help those of you who have spent several fustrating months with this this issue. Some, like myself, had resorted to using multiple remotes. I can't take credit for this, since another participant went through his success story a couple of years ago. I just wanted to provide an update and success story for a problem that continues to go unanswered by DTV Stream Technical Support.

I'm not sure what your point is. The fact that this problem continues to this day tells me that Directv Stream Technical Support has not incorporated these recommendations into their troubleshooting protocol. I responded to this post because it is the most recent I could find. If you know of a better way to get the message out, please let me know.

Thanks for your help. This was my first reply to a "fairly recent" post concerning a problem that has haunted me and many others. I've actually come to this forum several times over the past few months trying to find a solution. Last night (after spending over an hour on the phone with another tech support person), I found a possible solution (that worked) in a post that was over two years old! Are you saying that other people might not benefit as I did by doing a Google search and finding my comment in the older thread? Please tell me how to start a new post (seriously) and I will do it. I've registered for the Forum, but I haven't seen a way to start a new post on this subject.

@allen48 When you are in the Forum go to where at the top of your screen where it says (ask a question) and you will be able to create your own post there. When you click on it, it will take you to a form that you fill out where you can ask a question or start a conversation of any kind in regards to Directv service of any kind. I hope this helps you get your message out.
