Directv Streaming BYOD?
Just recently - 2days ago- signed up for the Directv Streaming plan where yo bring your own device. (They do not provide a device). When I called to buy a refurb $49.99 device, they said that I would need to switch to their other Directv Choice plan that included one “FREE” device at a rate of $84.95 instead of the $99 plan that I had signed up for. But then I asked about any other fees and was told about the mandatory $15 advanced reciever fee and regional sports fee of $12. This made the monthly rate go from $99 to $112. I told them to leave me on my Directv Stream BYOD(bring you own device) plan. My question is can I buy an Osprey reciever from another source and use it on my system to forgoe the advanced reciever fee?

Hi u/Scossey. Thank you for sharing your inquiry with us. To answer your question, yes, you can buy any other streaming device, and it will let you use your STREAM account without issues. Check out this article to find more information about compatible devices https://www.directv.com/support/article/KM1200941. Thank you for contacting DIRECTV. Luisa, DIRECTV Community Specialist

You can but be cautious on the buy. I would stay away from eBay! Solid Signal offers the device here

Yes, you can get them from 3rd party sellers. You can get them on Amazon and I would try not to buy from eBay but if you chose to go this route just make sure the seller excepts returns in case you get a box that does not work.

Before buying from a 3rd party---try Directv's twitter support. I normally have better luck with them.

Thanks for the feedback. My main concern is, If I obtain a new, unused osprey device, will Directv activate it on my $99 BYOD account, or will they force me to change my account to the $112 account that includes the $15/month advanced reciever charge. Or can the Osprey box just be used unactivaded as a streaming device and if so can I take advantage of the dedicated buttons on the remote to make my wife happy

BYOD--Bring your own device. They'll activate it.

I just bought two (2) refurbished Gemini set top boxes for $50/ea directly from DirecTV on a BYOD plan for the exact same reason as you, wanting the $99/mo Choice Stream plan instead of the $112/mo Choice plan that includes the new Gemini Air which I didn't want (I wanted an Ethernet-connected device that plugged into my 10 ft HDMI cable through the wall to my TV). Just call the DirecTV Loyalty line at 866-986-0944 and they'll set you up.

Yes you can, but note that unless you go on a 24month contract and pay the $15/mo fee - you won't have access to your cloud dvr recordings via the device. It's quite frustrating as the osprey box and remote make it a very good user experience.
