Gemini Air dropping connection

I recently hooked up the device in my bedroom TV hung on the wall. I constantly lose internet connection on the device. I have a very strong connection in bedroom (my router is in living room on other side of the wall). Could being behind a large tv cause the issue? I had a Roku TV previously in same spot without issue. I don't have any hiccups when it is connected like a weak signal. I thought of buying an HDMI extension cable

CharlieReck,

I have experiences much like yours, just in a different order. I’m writing this because I agree with what you are saying. If you review my adventures documented in what is turning out to be an epic thread you will see that like many folks I tried to make the DirecTV solution work for the very reason you pointed out, it’s familiar and drives like a traditional “cable” solution. I wanted DirecTV to work for me so badly that I fought it for 2 months. I finally abandoned the Gemini Air devices and bought the latest Fire TV Max 4K sticks and started running DirecTV on them. All of the no network issues went away and I thought I was finally in the clear. However I got close to cancelling my AT&T U-Verse account when I started getting error messages in the middle of watching a program on DirecTV. The screen would go blank and a message would pop up about “Network Congestion” Eventually I would get the program back, but a Google search revealed this to be another problem that appears periodically and has for quite some time, maybe even years. That’s when I said I’m done! I subscribed to YouTube TV and I agree it has a learning curve, but I’ve gotten through that. It just works very well. A few days ago for fun I tried to crash my network by streaming HD or 4K content to 3 TVs, a desktop computer, a laptop computer, and my iPhone all at the same time using YouTube, YouTube TV, Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Peacock all at the same time. No hickups, no buffering, nothing crashed, and everything was running at full resolution. I did a Speedtest in the middle of all of this and I still had an additional 250 Mbit of capacity available.

I really wanted DirecTV to work but somehow I don’t think there’s anything wrong with my network. I think there is a HW/Firmware issue with the Gemini Air device that makes it more finicky than any other WiFi device I am using. It’s a shame, and I’m certainly not an expert, but my experience leads me to this conclusion, for whatever it’s worth, which isn’t much. It’s just my opinion!

Oh, and as an added bonus, I now have access to all of my local channels. Because of a "Carrier Dispute / Negotiation" between AT&T / DirecTV and my local Fox affiliate, I haven't had access to that local channel for what is approaching 3 YEARS! Really!! Many times over the last several years I have lost access to several of my local channels, usually for several months. Extremely aggravating. That's why most of my friends have moved on from AT&T / DirecTV, I was just a holdout, thinking stupidly that it would get better, but 3 years, that might be a definition of stupidity on my part. I complained to my Congressional delegation (like that did any good, HA), the FCC, and maybe even the FTC. I think the FCC complaint actually got a response from AT&T that was a standard song and dance about the "ongoing negotiations" and how sorry they were for my inconvenience. That was a year ago and I still don't have access to Fox Network through AT&T U-Verse. Getting it just fine on YouTube TV. I guess this is one of the situations that is leading towards more "Cord Cutting". Sorry for the rant, don't want to hijack the thread. I guess my hope is someone from DirecTV actually notices these threads and is concerned about Customer Satisfaction at all. I can dream I guess.

CharlieReck,

If your Gemini Air keeps going to sleep, have you tried turning Power Saving off?  Here's how: Home/right arrow/Settings-OK/System-OK/Device Preferences-OK/way down to Screen Saver-OK/toggle both Screen Saver and Power Saving off (note the message under Power Saving)/Exit

Hope this helps.  I don't have the sleep issue and Power Saving was still on.  I turned it off just to be safe.

Update:  I just read something on another forum that makes me want to modify my answer.  If you use apps such as Netflix or Max and like to pause and run to the kitchen for a snack, leave screen saver ON.  Otherwise the Air will shut down the app after 2-3 minutes and you have to restart the app and find your program again.  This has happened to me and it's very frustrating especially since this doesn't happen to me while pausing live TV.  Screen saver on solved the problem for the poster on the other forum.  I turned mine back on.

I have tried the power saving both ways and it does not make a difference.  Last weekend Directv sent me two new units (Gemini Air) made in 01/2024.  Installed both and left off about 12 hours and had to reboot.  Additionally while watching TV both units have just rebooted while watching a program.  Both TV have Power Saving mode turned off.  However the device has its own power so you think it would keep power

Are you turning off the power saving mode on the Gemini Air----or your tv? Sounds like tv in your last reply

I have turned Power saving mode off on both of my TV's (LG and Samsung)  Then I also have tried both on and off on the Gemini Air device.  Not that it should make any difference but I have rebooted my Linksys Router and verified the firmware is up-to-date.  The firmware on the TV is up-to-date as well as the Gemini Air device.  On the network connection test of my router I get 120MPS and the connection speed on the Gemini devices is 81 and 84 MPS.  So speed is not an issue. If I lose wifi/internet I get messages from multiple devices such as security, pool equipment, camera, etc  To check also I have a Google Chromecast dongle  which I was using for a You Tube trial and I can jump over to that device and see if any issues like connecting to Netflix.  I tried unplugging the Google device with no changes,  On the new Gemini Air I only make one chage from the factory settings and that is the Startup mode, Factory setting for that is Home Screen and I choose option to last channel watched. I leave the power saving on till it fails and then I turn it off.  Simple question why does it work when I turn on and off say every 4 hours but not when it sits idle for say 12+ hours,

I used to have a combo modem/router Askey from Mediacom. When I purchased a Netgear router my connectivity issue stoped with my Gemini air. Maybe it's you Linksys router that's causing an issue with your Gemini air. To have issues in that many Gemini air devices makes me think it's something in your Internet environment causing the problem

Thanks.  A good Idea but I don't believe in spending $300 for a new mesh router system to solve their issue.  If I was getting connection error all the time then I would say Yes a router issue.  However if I turn on the TV say every 10 hours I do not have an issue.  However if I use it at night and turn off at 10PM and then come back the next night at say 900 PM for the news I get the error.  So help me understand why a new router would change the connection to last more than 12 hours?  IYes my mesh router is 5 years old but I expect I should get a little longer life.  Also a swap out is not a quick thing by the time you go around and reconfigure say 30 devices. I have outside electrical plugs, inside electrical plugs, cameras inside and our, garage openers, doorbell, PC, phones, chromebook, Google chromecast for TV, appliances, Pool equipment, irrigation say system, alarm, hot water heater, smoke and water detectors, etc, that need to be setup with a new router.  All this works very nicely for the past 5 years and so does the Gemini Air except when I dont use it for a day.  My next attempt is to buy some new smart plugs and turn the device on and off every 4 hours, stupid but a possible simple solution to an engineering issue.

My Netgear router was only 70 dollars and supports 1 GB speed. You could always get a cheap router just to try and see if yours is the issue....then return the test router. Or you could just plug in a cheap router into your current router and use it for only your Gemini Air... it will work that way as well. If you aren't willing to troubleshoot the issue..you are never going to solve the problem. I can guarantee the issue comes from something in your environment. Good luck

CharlieReck,

While I have moved on from trying to make the Gemini Air devices work at my house, I continue to follow this thread because I'm curioius about a possible solution. So many folks comment that "it's your network" yet there isn't any quidance as to what is "wrong with your network". I was in the same boat as you in that all of the other devices in my house were working fine without any issues, and yet my router and mesh system were quite old. (I use a separate router and just use my mesh system as the "WiFi host"). Anyway, before I gave up completely I did replace both my router and my mesh system. Of course, had no effect on the problems with the Gemini Air devices, just made my wallet lighter. I will say that my WiFi performance did increase with the new hardware though. I certainly experienced the very same symptoms you have been documenting in this thread. One of the features of my router (a really slick Asus unit, router only, no WiFi capability at all) is that it benchmarks various DNS server options that are out there. It identified several that are very fast, Google being one of them. My ISP is T-Mobile and I am using 5G home internet from them. It is blazingly fast (generally 400 Mb/sec download and sometimes as high as 750 Mb/sec!!) and has been working well for me for almost 3 months. I did some research though because I wanted to absolutely optimize my new setup in all respects and there were comments that the T-Mobile DNS servers aren't all that great, slow basically. I guess if you leave the DNS server setting at default in your router it uses the DNS server of your ISP. I went into my router and changed the DNS settings to where it is using Google instead of T-Mobile. The change in responsiveness in my network was dramatic. Web content loads at the speed of thought now. In my research I found comments about if your DNS server is too slow, devices will respond that there isn't a network, when in fact there really is. If you could possibly try this in your environment I think would be extremely helpful for so many folks that are struggling with the problems with the Gemini Air. Like I said, I have moved on so I don't have DirecTV or any Gemini Devices at all now. This is just a theory on my part, but seems possibly plausable.

Paul,  I would like to use T Mobile since they have been my cell service for 12 years.  The issue I have is my TMobile phone only gets 2MBS download and .05 upload at my house.  Numerous times over the past several years I have opened service records and get response like your phone is bouncing between two towers, we should have it fixed in a few days. Call back and test and no changes, They finally gave up. Interesting I can go about 1/2 mile away and get 360MPS on my Samsung phone.  So I use Century Link and get apx 100 MPS Down and 20MPS up.  for about the last 15 years.  This has always been plenary fast to watch Netflix, Paramount, Disney, You Tube TV etc. with the current settings.  And Directv works great with no buffering issues.

Just an update.  It may be that "something" has changed in the background or with the way in which the system connects to the in-house dongle.  I have not had any issues for sometime now and nothing has changed on my end.

In addition, the remote control was eating batteries and needed to have them replaced in less than two weeks.  The last set I put in is now way beyond that and still going strong - to me this means "something" changed as the outcomes are now different.  Hopefully this will now be a stable situation.

What I did was to buy a couple of smart plugs and I programed to turn off and on 2 minutes later about every 6 to 7 hours.  I received a couple of new dongles from Directv with a manufactured date of 01/2024 thinking the old ones they gave me mayb be causing the issue.  Regardless the issue starteed up again in a few days when I left the TV off.  SInce all my testing began and troubleshooting the issue seemed if I did not watch TV for about 12 hours I would have to wait for the message to reboot.  So since I did not want to be home turning the TVs on and off I had the smart plugs do it for me and the only thing plug into the smart plug was the Dongle.  Since I started  with the make do fix I have not had an issue.  SO for the people who issue went away what is the setting for Power save?   Thanks for everybody input.  I was so desperate to get it fixed I almost tried somebody suggestion to replace my complete mesh system,  WHen pricing at the store I did not want to spend $300 and do a bunch of work reconnecting all my devices and I thought a $20 solution for a couple of Wemo plugs might be worth the try.  If not I could always use someplace inside the house like the other ones I use indoor and outdoor for things like Christmas Lights.  A very nice smart plug to replace all those old timers.  Nice app with multiple settings like fix on off time, maybe 15 minutes before sunset and fixed off time, etc.
