In my case both WiFi and Ethernet prevent me from updating the DirecTV Stream box.
For some reason the box doesn't like some internet setups or the updates are somehow blocked by some providers.
To update my boxes (2) I always have to activate a VPN on my router, which has DD-WRT operating system on it. Afterwards I switch off the VPN on the router. I've tried different VPN providers and all seem to work in my situation.
Don't forget to switch off the VPN after the firmware update, since it may slow down your internet speed or sometimes DirecTV may notice it and block it.

Osprey box has google play store can't you just install a VPN on the box instead of having to put it on your router?

YES, it also worked if you use a VPN app on the box itself.
In my case it does slow down the box a lot, that's why I prefer a VPN on the router.
But thanks for the reminder, that using a VPN app on the box itself is also possible and usually a lot easier.
