My device is an Updating loop!

New DirecTV Stream user here.   As money is tight (I'm on a fixed income) I bought an AT&T 'Kick Back' streaming device (new in sealed box) on eBay and I'm trying to set it up (with an ethernet connection).  It completes the first system update, asks me tp pair the remote (which I did) and then starts checking for updates again.  After several minutes it reports 'there was a problem checking for updates, try again'.   I tried again and again and again, with the same result.   Please help me!

The box is probably registered to the original owner and needs to be deactivated by him for you to use it. Known issue - lots of posts on the problem of devices from eBay.. DirecTV Stream will not deactivate it for you. You need to contact the user personally.

If you look over on the reddit forum someone asked for reputable ebay sellers. There are a couple suggestions for sellers sending boxes out with no issues. I'd get a refund and try again.

Thanks for the feedback.  This AT&T device was brand new in a factory sealed box, so I doubt that it was ever registered or used.

The issue you are describing is exactly the problem people are having with previously owned boxes.  Did you try the red button reset? One user on reddit said something about hitting the reset button 11 times in a row that fixed the issue for him. Not sure if that was a fluke or...

Just because it's not opened does not mean it's not registered. If the owner got it from AT&T or DirecTV Stream it was registered to the account opened or not.

Most do. Just get a true streaming device like a Roku or Fire Stick. Get a 6 pack and forget it all and enjoy the service.

Get a refund from the Ebay seller. They gave you a box you can't use.. then use that reddit link I posted and buy from a reputable seller.
