Watching laptop (internet) shows using directtv via Ethernet, question; do I have to buy a separate modem and program that?
I just recently bought a long ethernet cord to try and see if my DIRECTV receiver can pick up Internet ; and I can use the Ethernet cord or buy a modem — baffles — but it will be cool if I could do that because DIRECTV is pretty expensive month.

Are you a DirecTV Satellite or DirecTV Stream customer?
DirecTV Stream always uses the internet to access its streaming content. And you can access the internet via your home's WiFi or an ethernet cable, if your streaming device supports direct ethernet connection.
Perhaps I'm not understanding your question.
