Audio Works, Video does Not.

I recently upgraded the firmware in my receiver.  The update worked.  Every device I have connected to my receiver is working exactly as before the upgrade.  Except my DirecTV service.

I have an HR44/700 downstairs and a genie upstairs.  When I turn my system on the guide shows up briefly, sometimes a moment of video, then the video drops out completely leaving only sound.  I power cycled and reset the genie (note: the 'starting up' 'welcome screen' and other screens DO come on), but when the video starts, poof!

I've tried unplugging from the wall both units for 30 minutes, simple reboots/power cycles all with the same results.  None of my other devices (pc, fire, blu-ray) are having any issues.

Also brought in another TV and ran another hdmi cable to the genie and it worked perfectly.  I was hoping to get a setup screen where I could tell it was resolution, etc., but none came up.

Help!?!

What are your receiver models? You say you have an HR44 downstairs and a ‘Genie’ upstairs. It is not possible to have two Genies on one account. Perhaps you are referring to a Genie Mini client upstairs or otherwise another standalone HD or HDDVR receiver. Please confirm receiver models.

First, you may try pressing ‘RES’ on the HR44 to toggle through resolutions. Do you see a picture on the TV at any point during the resolutions?

Additionally, does sound and video work on the receiver upstairs? (upstairs as in above the HR44)

If it does, this is a problem with the HR44’s connection to your TV. Whether it be the HDMI cable, HDMI terminal, or the TV’s video itself, you can try a bit of troubleshooting yourself. Swap the HDMI cable and try a different terminal (i.e. HDMI1 instead of HDMI2). As you said that bringing in another TV fixed the issue, eliminating the previous two troubleshooting steps could lead to a defective TV.

Thank you for your quick response.

Genie Mini Upstairs.

Yamaha RX-V6A receiver.

I'll 2x check the resolutions via the HR44.

I'm pretty sure the connection between the receiver is good given other sources work fine.   Next step is what you've suggested (new cable & different input port), reboot, restart, retry, etc.   My WAG is the fw update also updated the HDMI/HDCP so the receiver is getting something (or not) it is expecting.  The cable may be the issue in that case.

Will report back, thanks again.

An update.

1st I swapped the hdmi connections between the input to the Genie and FireTV (on the units).  The Genie still didn't work (on the FireTV Receiver port), but the FireTV did work (using the Genie port.) I checked all my devices and the Genie and Blu-ray player show the same problem, audio and no video.   The other devices - FireTV, Chromecast and PC all work fine.  Next, I got a brand new high-speed cable (the old ones are, too), and connected the Genie to an unused HDMI port.  Same result.  I then tried same with Blu-ray, same result.   So both of these devices do not work with two different cables into two different HDMI ports on the receiver.  fyi, I'm going to work the other 'end' with Yamaha in parallel.  Here's why: there was one odd moment after I moved the BR player where it worked on the new cable/port.  I then went to test the DTV and the display said 'reference switching' and the DTV failed.  I went back to the BR and it was back to sound/no video!?!  Thanks again for prompt response!

One other thought, it would be helpful to know what HDMI and HDCP specification is on the Genie Mini.  I have a wired C31 client.  If there are any other settings or specs (CEC, Atmos, et) that need to check that would be helpful.

@jahmon Thank you for the update.

I want to confirm that you can use a conventional HDMI cable with your C31 receiver.

Additionally, we can try to reset your DIRECTV receiver in the following link
Most of the time this help us to fix issues like pixilation, bad picture, or trouble with sound.

Please let us know hoow it goes, we'll be attentive.

Ok, an update after I spoke with Yamaha.  I think we can get this to work.  I DO need to know what HDMI and HDCP standards are supported by the C31 Genie Mini.  Thank you.

Hello @jahmon Thank you for keeping us updated about this and sharing this information. Allow me to explain this for you.

In this case, for your C31 Genie Mini, it is recommended to use ARC HDMI if possible. Both TV and the receiver must labeled "ARC" to work.

Thank you.  Luis,  I've done some searching and cannot find a spec sheet for the C31 that says anything except "HDMI" which version?  1.4?

All DTV receivers have HDMI 1.4 ports except for the C61K that has HDMI 2.0 and all receivers are HDCP 2.2 compatible.

Thank you Shannon!

Jonathan, I'm working the Yamaha side at the moment.  Will update after I'm done.   One update-- I did get my blu-ray player working properly be deprecating it's HDMI input on the receiver to 1.4.   I tried same on DTV but it didn't work.  On my last test with DTV, I reset both the a/v receiver and the genie mini.  It booted up, and I even saw the guide flash by before it cut to just audio.

You mentioned in you first post you connected the C31 to another TV have you tried connecting it directly to the TV with the problem?  It seems to be a problem with the Yamaha update.

Shannon,  I agree - something changed with the fw update that should not have.  I'm working with Yamaha to resolve today.  Will report back.   What's weird is when I restart the C31, I see all the self-check/welcome/please wait screens, then the guide/header flashes for a second then, boom, just audio.   The good is that should eliminate any wiring as the issue.
