Cannot read access card. Related to slow internet?

We had the HD DVR genie and mini genie installed in July.  Beginning in September, we began getting a message that our access card cannot be read.  This can occur up to three times a day.  We press the reset button and the receiver goes through its thing and everything is fine until it occurs again.  We live in the country and are therefore limited to internet speed.  If our internet traffic is heavier, then we get the access card error.  So is this problem related to our internet speed?  Can we disconnect our DirectTV receiver from the internet?  We don’t use the dvr or pay per view features.  Thanks.

Update:  I ended up calling Directv (only on hold for a minute) and they ended up sending me a replacement receiver.  All was working fine but then our mini genie would not work with a 620 error.  Called Directv again and they ended up scheduling a service tech appt on Oct. 31st.  I decided to do some troubleshooting myself and found a loose cable connection in our basement.  Tightened it and now the mini genie works again.  Got a call yesterday from tech support in follow up.  Told them it was fixed and what I found.  Was surprised to get the follow up call.  They wanted to get my service back ASAP.

Nope, the access card has nothing to do with your internet. The access card is what decrypts the signal, figures out the channels you are authorized for, stores your receiver and account info, etc.

Try taking the card out and gently using an eraser to clean the physical contacts on the card. You can also try to rub off whatever material got on the access card’s contacts. What error code do you get? I assume 764.

Thank you for your response.  I took the access card out and cleaned it, although it did not look like there was any material on it.  We’ll see if it helps.  I believe the error message we were getting was 745.

Error code 745 either means a bad access card or a bad card reader in the receiver. You can try putting the ‘bad’ access card in another receiver and seeing if it is recognized. If not, this would mean a bad access card. Call DIRECTV (number in my greeting below) and ask for a replacement access card for ~ $20. Otherwise, if the card works in the other receiver, it is likely a bad card reader. In that case, you’ll likely need a replacement receiver. What are your current receiver models and which one has error 745? I can assist on telling you a good ‘replacement’ receiver if it comes down to that.

The cards are married to the receiver and will not work in another receiver and the minis don't have access cards.  DTV satellite service doesn't need internet to work so your internet speed has nothing to do with the problem.

Right but in order to test the receiver you can do what I stated. The error code should be ‘You inserted the wrong card.’ This will show that the card was recognized and that it works.
