Gemini will not open apps

I got the Gemini to use with my Genie in December. In March it stopped loading or opening apps. It says there is a problem with HBO or that there is no internet connection. After two days of unplugging and resets and hours of DIRECTV support calls they decided the unit was defective and shipped another. I set it up, reloaded and signed into my apps and it worked for ONE day. Now we are back to the same old endless circle spinning and frozen screens…but if I switch to the Sony smart tv or AppleTV apps open instantly. My internet speed is 100+MGPS and the DIRECTV test shows the connection is solid and speed is excellent. What now?

got it, clear...  to be precise, your Orbi shows the various SSID's of the wifi networks it "sees", but clearly it is not connected to the DTV 5 gig wifi used for the connection between the server and the clients.

The apps should be accessing the internet through the Ethernet or the wifi on the Gemini, independently of all other connections with anything else... I have seen some weird stuff...

It might be worthwhile to experiment and use a hardwired Ethernet to the Gemini, it's the only other thing I think that would be obstructing the Gemini apps, even though it says it is connected by wifi.. (and

We’re sorry the issue is still happening even after the Gemini device replacement, @DGplusdogs. We have a specialist on standby, ready to help. Sending you a DM. Rhyan, DIRECTV Community Team

Any chance you got a new home router or firewall or wireless access point?

what if anything did you do to your home network at that time? list everything even if you are sure it could not affect the situation

No change at all to network or router.

strange, because it's clearly not a hardware issue, but something blocking or not accessable...

have you a hardware connection to your Gemini (not the Genie/Genie 2)?

I was able to get the Gemini to connect by following some instructions I found in the forum. A man paid a Directv technician for the service call. The technician told him to never hit the red reset button like the support site says. I unplugged both the Genie and Gemini. Plugged the Genie in first, let it reboot, then plugged in the Gemini. Before tech support had me hit reset buttons soooo many times but the same error message. Crossing my fingers this one holds as a solution.

so, the reset button pressed for about a second is NO harm...

When I first got my Gemini, I needed to reboot it almost weekly... now it's more like monthly.

I rarely need to reboot the Genie 2... also I have a Geni Mini (client), and that rarely needs rebooting...

to be clear, go into the Gemini settings and see if it is indeed connected to the internet, not just the wireless bridge to the Genie 2.

By the way, I'm assuming you have a Genie 2 server/tower, please correct if I am mistaken.

Both say they are connected. DIRECTV internet set up says connected and with excellent speed. My Sony Android Smart TV can connect to apps when Gemini cannot. My Orbi app shows the DIRECTV wifi connection as well as the Genie 2 and Gemini. Also the Sony TV connection.

So if it was me, I would hard connect the Gemini Ethernet to your home network, and not connect the Gemini wireless...  this would help elmininate the possibility that the Orbi mesh wifi is blocking somehow...

I believe that when you connect a hard line to the Gemini, it stops using the wifi..

(not the wifi between it and the server)

That would be what I would take as the next step.

I’m back where I was a week ago, but worse! After unplugging both the Gemini and Genie 2, the access to apps worked for three days…but since then no amount of unplugging or resets will make the Gemini connect to apps but the access to apps from the Sony Android tv is perfect.

on the screen, the Gemini will “open” an app, but the windows for content are blacked out and it says “try again later, experiencing difficulties accessing.” The Gemini is connected to the Genie by HDMI but an Ethernet connection to the Gemini is physically impossible. I was assured by DIRECTV before signing up for the Gemini that a direct Ethernet connection was not necessary , that wireless would be fine as it was for years with the Genie and satellites.

Well, I would get a long Ethernet and TRY it... that would give you either the problem, or eliminate your wifi setup.

Nothing else really makes sense to me...

When you go to the network part of the Gemini menu, what does you network test show? how about the speed test part?
