RC73 Remote Buttons Not Responding
I have two Genie RC73 Remote Controls that have been slowing losing functionality. It's gotten to the point that I can no longer ignore the issue as it makes using DirecTV very difficult. I'm hoping someone on these forums might have some troubleshooting steps that I may have missed.
With the remote for the main receiver, the On, Off, Guide and Exit buttons do not respond or light up the light. All the other buttons function and give a fast blinking green light. Pressing On about 50 times eventually turns on the receiver.
With the remote for the mini receiver, the On button needs to be pressed 20-30 times before it gives a fast blinking green light and turns on the receiver. The Guide button needs to be held down for 4-5 seconds before it will give a fast blinking green light. It opens the guide but then immediately opens the filter screen making it near impossible to use.
Troubleshooting steps I have tried:
- I reset the HR54-500 Genie Receiver with the red side button, which gives:
-
- Checking Satellite Settings
- Receiving Satellite Info
- I reset the C51-100 Genie Mini Receiver with the red side button, which gives:
-
- Hardware Testing In Progress
- Updating Receiver Settings
- Loading Data
- I lightly cleaned the outside of both remotes with an isopropyl alcohol wipe
- I inserted brand new batteries in both remotes
- I held down Mute and Enter on both remotes to switch to RF mode
- I tried different areas of the rooms these are in
- I cycled the power on both receivers
- I tried disconnecting and connecting the receivers from the televisions
Is there anything else I can try or have my controllers finally died? I notice the manufacture date on all my equipment is 2016. Do I qualify for a swap?
Thank you

If you have DirecTV's Equipment Protection Plan they'll replace your remote controls for free. Otherwise cheaper on Amazon or eBay.

@ren42deal if you sign in to your DIRECTV account online, you can avoid the phone call. Just go to Account Overview, scroll down and click on Manage Equipment, select Accessories at the top menu, and choose the remote that you would like. It would automatically order it for you free of charge and you will receive a confirmation on the tracking number as well as the order confirmation number. This will avoid the pain of calling DIRECTV.

I had never checked for that on my bill before, but it looks like I'm paying the $8.99 a month for the DirecTV Protection Plan. I guess I'll give Customer Service a call. That for the response!
(Like the Black Plague, I try to avoid having to call a Company's Customer Service line at all costs, but I guess I will have to. Maybe I'll try the chat.)

Thank you for your waiting, William. In order to determine if the remote needs to be replaced we will need to complete a couple of steps.
On your remote, please press and hold the number 1 key on remote and let me know the status of the remote light.
After this please release the number 1 key on the remote and let me know the status of the remote light after releasing the key.
This information will help us to determine if the remote needs to be replaced or the troubleshooting that needs to be done to fix this issue. I'll be here looking forward to hearing from you.

I'm pretty sure the last comment on this forum, in this thread, directed to me, that I responded to was to log into the DIRECTV.com website and request new remotes. If I'm not imagining things, I guess that comment was deleted and replaced. This is really bad etiquite.
That said, on all four of my RC73 controllers, holding down the 1 button causes the green status light to blink rapidly. Depressing button 1 causes the light to stop lighting up.
This is not the case with other buttons like On or Guide. Those buttons have no response.

You're right. I see that now. I guess I'm not used to the format. Please tell me you can't also see my account details?
I appreciate the responses.
