setup for a firetv

My main Directv receiver is hooked to a TV that is not internet able or firetv. I have a genie attached to the tv in another room.  I am going to replace that tv fir a firetv.  Do I hookthe genie up to the firetv???

Not sure I understand your question. But there are two types of "FireTV". There's the stand-alone FireTV/FireStick device that connects to your HDTV. Those have no additional video inputs to connect something like a DirecTV box. And there are also "FireTVs" that are actual HiDef TVs. Those, of course, do have video inputs.

Thank you. First off, FYI< I am technologically challenged. I just got an Insignia Firetv edition tv. The directions include connections for - HDMI, AV (I'm guessing for a DVD player etc) and Coaxial.

so would I connect the genie using the coaxial directions? or justuseDirectv stream??

Hello @jcallaha, thanks for reaching us.

We understand that you are referring to a new Smart TV.

You can set up your Genie receiver to this new TV by plugging one end of the cable into the HDMI port on the back of your receiver. Then, Plug the other end of the cable into the HDMI port on your TV.

Let us know how it goes!

@jcallaha the TV you bought is called an Insignia Fire TV because it has the Fire TV operating system built in as a special perk, essentially taking away the need for a separate streaming box that connects to the TV’s HDMI port. This way, the viewer only needs the TV remote to do their streaming.

in your case, the DIRECTV genie would be connected to the Insignia Fire TV via one of its HDMI ports. Once connected, you switch the input on the actual TV with its remote. The source will depend on which HDMI port you plugged the HDMI  cable into. For example, if you plugged the HDMI into terminal HDMI2, then you switch to source ‘HDMI2’ on the TV. This should bring up the Genie receiver as long as it is turned ON and working.

DIRECTV STREAM is a separate service from DIRECTV satellite and does not use a Genie receiver. Rather, it uses the actual Insignia TV as it has Fire TV built in. Just download the DIRECTV STREAM app from the ‘Apps’ section on the Insignia TV using its remote. Or you can hold down the voice button and say ‘DIRECTV STREAM’ to Alexa.

Just a reminder again that DIRECTV STREAM is separate from DIRECTV satellite, and you must be subscribed to DIRECTV STREAM separately as it does not COME WITH DIRECTV satellite.

DTV streaming is a separate service that comes from AT&T not from DTV.

@shannon02

Huh? DirecTV Stream and DirecTV Satellite are both DirecTV services, not AT&T anymore.

AT&T still has a 70% share of DTV and provides the internet to DTV streaming since DTV is not an ISP.

@shannon02

True. But DirecTV Satellite and DirecTV Stream are part of the same "spun off" company. AT&T may provide backbone services for DirecTV Streaming service, but that's not really relevant. I just don't want folks to get the idea that they should call AT&T for DirecTV Stream issues. They need to call DirecTV.
