How to connect U-Verse modem so I can utilize wall jacks which are pre-wired in the house

UVerse & Land Line using same jack

just had a new land line installed. AT&T was supposed to use a second jack in the house, but they used the UVerse DSL line. I plugged the phone into the back of the Gateway and it does not work. I then used a two line filter and it works, but does this compromise the dsl?
