link apple tv to directv account
i have an Apple TV account that i want to link to my DirecTV account. the DirecTV web site says "Already have Apple TV? We’ve got you! You can link your existing Apple TV account to your DIRECTV bill", but then fails to provide any instructions on how to do that. on the account page there's only an option to purchase the Apple TV package, no option to simply link an existing account. how do i link an existing Apple TV account?

Thanks for reaching out, @lhitetx1. We completely understand the confusion, but we’ve got you covered. To link your existing account and move your billing to DIRECTV, you actually do need to select 'Add' or purchase the Apple TV add-on through your DIRECTV Account Manager.
Don't worry—you won't be double-charged! Once you click add, check your email for an activation link (or look for the 'Activate Now' button in your Account Manager). When you log in with your existing Apple ID during that activation step, Apple will automatically merge your accounts and switch your billing over to us. Rhyan, DIRECTV Community Team

ok, went thru the add/activate process and ended up on an Apple screen that said "You're signed up for Apple TV through @@CarrierName@@". not very encouraging. and below that was what appeared to be a link for "Connect Subscription". but clicking that did nothing. rather confusing. and on top of that, somewhere during the process it seemed to indicate that my monthly DirecTV bill would increase $X with the cost of the Apple TV -- but my AppleTV subscription is paid for on an annual basis. and sure enough, my credit card just got hit with a monthly charge. so quess i'm going to spend a couple of hours on the phone trying to get that straightened out.
should have never tried this in the first place. my bad.

update -- talked to customer support and ended up just cancelling the Apple TV link and getting the initial charge refunded. apparently if you pay your Apple account on an annual basis, you can't link it to your DirecTV account. only works for monthly payments.
the good news here is that i also have an MLB.TV account that i was planning to link to my DirecTV account next spring. now that ain't going to happen! as the old saw goes, leave well enough alone.
