Gemini (Osprey) Box App Version
I have 3 of these old boxes. They are slow to respond to commands, but they work better with DTV than the DTV app on my Roku devices.
In another thread, @Ludwick577 said: "Actually. The current version for both the Air and Osprey box is 34.5.5.20"
One of my 3 boxes has this version. The other two boxes are stuck at 34.4.9.255. No amount of red button restarts, reboots or "check for updates" will cause it to actually do an update. I asked in a DM if they can push an update to my boxes (gave them the serial numbers and screen shots of the version, s/n, etc) and they said no. Wanted me to call support with a PIN. I'm not going through that again. Those CS agents make me answer a dozen redundant questions and explain everything multiple times and they still never really seem to understand my situation.
Any ideas on how to get these boxes to update? Maybe a factory reset??
These boxes are connected with ethernet. I use ethernet instead of wifi whenever possible. These old boxes are slow to respond to commands. It's frustrating. I suspect that the Gemini Air boxes will respond and function faster since they have a better/newer/faster processor? Is that true and if so how can I get a Gemini Air for a decent price?
Thanks!

My Gemini Air and Osprey have updated since I put that version number. Both are now on 34.5.7.37. Odd how your boxes aren't updating. Where did you get your devices? All from the same place or did the box that updated come from a different place vs the ones that aren't updating?
I have both devices. An Air and Osprey. They perform exactly the same for me. One is not faster than the other. They are both great.

Yes, that's true, @User5. You can buy a Gemini Air from us by logging in to your online account or give us a call, so an agent can assist. Contact us here: DIRECTV Customer Service - Phone Support & Chat John, DIRECTV Community Team

@DIRECTVhelp - I cannot find the page on your website to place an order for a Gemini Air.
@Ludwick577 - I believe the one Osprey box that was at 34.5.5.20 now indicates 34.5.7.37, so it must have updated again last night. That's good news. So that 1 out of 3 boxes boxes I own is getting updates and that box came from a local Goodwill store. Heck of a deal! It has a manufacture date of April 2020. The other 2 boxes that will not update came from eBay (in a couple different purchases, so probably from different vendors at different times) and have a manufacture date of Nov 2019. Only 6 months older than the one that will update itself.
Its good to know that the Air and Osprey devices seem to function the same for you. Neither one is zippier than the other? I bought the best Roku Ultra you can get because it is zippy (and have had to abandon it because the DTV app is so poorly written). I guess I'm impatient and don't like waiting for several seconds when I press a button to load an app for example. Since you're saying the Air will not give me that zippy experience, I guess there is no reason to buy one.
Thanks again!

@User5 If I had to choose between the 2 --it would be the box because it has an ethernet port. The Gemini Air is wifi only.

@Ludwick577 thank you. I appreciate your thoughts on which box you'd select. I agree that the ethernet is best. I just thought the Air would perform better, but apparently thats not the case. Thanks again.

@Ludwick577 - so 2 of my 3 boxes will not update. I think I see the reason:
The 2 that will not update their software are SKU 60164
The 1 that will update itself 60233
The 60233 is slightly newer and I think it has more RAM.

Shouldn't make a difference. Are those the 2 you got from eBay?

Yes, those 2 with the SKU 60164 were from eBay. The 60233 was from Goodwill for $5.99. :)

@User5 How long have you had those 2 boxes from Ebay? Have they ever updated? What color is the label on the back of them?

@Ludwick577 all 3 boxes are green label.
The 2 from eBay (won't update DTV software):
One of them was purchased in 2023 and has been used daily.
The 2nd one was purchased in 2024 and is used at least once a week.
I have no idea if they have been updating themselves all this time. Never paid a lot of attention to the version numbers. Every few months I would manually 'check for updateds' and it always said 'up to date' so I never gave it much thought.
I have another odd twist to this story as of this morning. The box that is updating itself (SKU 60233) had gotten to 34.5.7.37, but then it was hosing up my screen resolution on the TCL TV. Every time I turned things off and turned back on the DTV box would change to 640x480. This is a somewhat new 4k TCL TV and this issue is a new one. So, this morning I did a factory reset on this box, and the resolution problem was fixed. However, now this box says its on version 34.5.5.20, so it rolled itself back. I saw that it said 'checking for updates' while getting itself factory reset and starting up again, so I don't know why it has rolled back. Sorry to confuse this issue but I thought this was weird enough to mention. I'm afraid to manually check for updates because I don't want the resolution problem to come back. I'm in an 'if it ain't broke right now then don't fix it' mode, so I'm going to sit tight on this box and see what happens.
I will keep checking the other 2 boxes. I factory reset one of them and it did not update the software (still at 34.4.9.255).

I know the Gemini Air boxes get updates before the boxes. My boxes update about 10 days after my Air gets that update. I'd say wait longer. As long as there aren't any issues using your boxes I wouldn't worry about it. Just take note of the current software version. Then check back once a week or so and see if that changes.
Don't know what to tell you about the TCL tv issue you are having.
