HomePod Stereo Pair Audio Syncing Issue with Osprey Box

I have a 3rd gen AppleTV 4K, 2nd gen HomePod (stereo paired) and a DirecTV streaming box (Osprey). I have my ATV run via ARC to my OLED LG ARC's input. Everything is fine in this HDMI input. I recently switched away from YouTubeTV to DirecTV streaming. Rather than going via the DirecTV app, I purchased an Osprey streaming box and hardwired it. I am running this via a different HDMI input and using my HomePod stereo pair as the default audio for all inputs. Everything there is also working fine.

NOTE - ATV, HomePods and Osprey box are all updated with the latest software.

Here is where the issue is... When using the Osprey box, there is a very noticeable audio/video sync issue when I have the 5.1 setting enabled within the Osprey box. When I turn off the 5.1 settings and go strictly to stereo, the sync issue is better, but still not 100% correct.

If I bypass the HomePods as audio and just go strictly with the TV speakers, then the audio syncs up fine as I would expect. It is only when I introduce the DTV streaming box does the sync issue arise. I am not seeing this issue in other rooms with the same streaming box and a different audio source (soundbar or TV speakers), so that leads me to believe that the issue is with the compatibility between the streaming box and the HomePods.

Has anyone else seen an issue like this? And if so, how were you able to correct it? Not sure what other settings changes I can do in order to get this sync issue correct.

We apologize for the inconvenience, @rzybly. There's an ongoing outage causing audio sync issues, and our team is working on a fix. Thanks for your patience. Rizza, DIRECTV Community Team

Thank you for the response, DIRECTVhelp. Is the ongoing outage you mentioned for all users, or just the users who are using HomePods as their default audio source? And is there an ETA as to when a fix will be ready?

It is affecting users streaming on Apple TV with HomePods. While there is no ETA for a fix yet, our team is actively working on it. Rizza, DIRECTV Community Team

OK, that is different than my issue. I am not using the DIRECTV app via Apple TV. I use a dedicated DIRECTV Osprey box to solely stream DTV. I use my ATV for all other streaming apps and play the audio through my connected HomePod stereo pair that is run via ARC from my ATV to TV. Because of that connection, all audio inputs into my TV default to the HomePods. My issue here is specifically between the HomePods and the DTV Osprey box.

To try and help isolate the issue further, I did some more testing. I downloaded the DIRECTV app on my AppleTV. I did not notice any audio lag/sync issues whatsoever with the TV speakers (just the same as with the Osprey box when using the TV's speakers). I then transitioned the audio away from the TV speakers over to the HomePod stereo pair. And that, too, did not have any audio delay/syncing issues.

So, it looks like the issue is not with the HomePods themselves, but the Osprey box and whatever it is doing with the audio in conjunction with the HomePods.

Hopefully this helps the DIRECTV techs to better zero in on what settings or code within the Osprey box is throwing off the audio. Again, when turning off the 5.1 settings in the Osprey settings, the audio gets synced up better and the audio is much louder, but when the 5.1 settings are turned on, the syncing is much worse and the audio level becomes much more muted. Something is definitely going on with the Osprey settings when working with the HomePods.

Thanks for taking the time to conduct further testing and share those findings. This information will be shared with our team too, as it will help with our investigation. Rizza, DIRECTV Community Team
