Surround sound not working

I connect my Firestick to my Samsung TV, and run an optical OUT feed to my Sony surround sound receiver.   I'm not getting true surround sound.  Is there a setting in DIrectv Stream or the FIrestick that I need to enable ?   Or is there some other device that I can use to feed my surround sound receiver ?

Many TVs cannot output DD5.1 surround audio to an external device. I'm guessing that's the case with your Samsung TV. Check the Owner's Manual.

Does your Sony AV Receiver have an extra HDMI Input? Then you can connect the FireStick to your AV Receiver and let the Sony feed video to your TV.

Thanks for responding.

Per the TV owners manual, it CAN output DD.   I dont see a HDMI input on my Sony receiver.   I did see an audio setting for DD on the Firestick, so will try that (instead of 'best available').

Otherwise, can I use some sort of device to send HDMI from the firestick to the TV and optical audio to the receiver ?   Does the Directv stream device provide this ?

Yes, the C71K DirecTV Stream box does provide both HDMI and optical digital audio outputs.

We hear you, @dhmeyer37

It's great to enjoy the full immersive experience that provides getting high audio quality equipment. The best option to have a full Dolby Digital experience is using the optical audio output directly from the streaming box to the sound bar.

Our DIRECTV STREAM device has a digital audio port that you can use to connect your preferred sound system through a digital audio Toslink cable. If set to 'surround', it will pass along any 5.1 it gets. When tuned to a stereo broadcast channel, it will lock you into those exact 2 channels (left/right) within the signal while the Dolby light still appears.

By the way, thanks to @litzdog911 for the prompt and accurate response.

When I use the 'best' available' audio selection on the Firestick, my Samsung TV receives audio.   When I use either of the (2) Dolby options on the Firestick, there is NO sound on the TV.

This seems to indicate that my TV requires the 'best available' selection ........... if I do that, using the Directv Stream Device, will Dolby surround sound still be sent to the surround receiver ?   I fear that if I have to use a Dolby option on the Firestick, I get no audio on my TV.  I sometimes watch TV (with audio) but without using the surround receiver.  (Hope that made sense)

I see there are 'HDMI audio extractor' devices - wondering if that would work for me ?

Thanks.
